What a great watch on bbc2.... I've been around longer than most and didn't realise he'd met a violent death. My history lessons left a lot to be desired...some amazing icons.

One of my dad's proudest stories is as a bus driver, he drove Gandhi, goat and all, around Clitheroe in the early 1930s when he visited the textile industry.

Unbelievably Gandhi was lodging in a house in West Bradford, Clitheroe next to where my relatives now live.

How John Lennon didn’t make this programme I’ll never know.

So hard just to draw it down to 4 people for each episode though.

I saw the Dalai Lama doing the crossword in the Sunday Times in a pub in Clapham Common.

He gave me a boiled sweet.

Definitely an icon - helped win WW2 then was blasted for being homosexual and pretty much rubbished for years.

Try and get a copy of “The Imitation Game”. Fairly recent film about Turing starring Benedict Cumberbach.

What was the sweet like? We met him at Mcleod Ganj on what turned out to be his birthday so we all got a bit of not very good cake; then we managed to arrive in Bandarseribagawan only a week or so later on the Sultan of Brunei's birthday and that (other than no beer) was a much better party.

It had reached that stage where you can hardly get the wrapper off. They were in a fancy silk bag though and I think the wrappers were specially designed.
Apart from him (and half a dozen not so discrete security people) I was the only one in the pub.

Gandhi quite rightly is an icon. So much so he was immortalised by the nursery rhyme Goosey Goosey Gandhi.
