Billy MacKenzie.

Post by hampsteadclaret » Tue Jan 22, 2019 2:53 am

William MacArthur MacKenzie (27 March 1957 – 22 January 1997) was a Scottish singer, with a high tenor voice. He was a member of The Associates.

Twenty two years today since he died - 'On 22 January 1997, depression and the death of his mother are believed to have contributed to Mackenzie's suicide. He overdosed on a combination of paracetamol and prescription medication in the garden shed of his father's house in Auchterhouse. He was 39 years old..'

MacKenzie was born and grew up in Dundee... he led a peripatetic lifestyle, decamping to New Zealand at the age of 16, and travelling across America aged 17...plenty online, he had an interesting life. The links below have plenty of background info. for anybody wanting to know a bit more..

Good band. It’s also the anniversary of Mark E Smith’s death on Thursday. Jamuary’s a bad time for it.

3..Yes I was going to mention the Smiths, and the song you mention.

'The song is popularly believed to have been about Morrissey's short-lived friendship with Billy Mackenzie, lead singer of the Associates. The Associates' album, Double Hipness, released in August 2000, included the song "Stephen [sic], You're Really Something", recorded by Billy MacKenzie and Alan Rankine during the band's reunion in 1993 as a response to "William, It Was Really Nothing".
