James Bulger film nominated for Oscar ....

Post by Clarets4me » Tue Jan 22, 2019 8:56 pm

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-46964691

How can you make a film about two 10 year olds murdering a toddler, and not even advise the victim's family that you plan to do so ? Film-maker, Vincente Lambe said " With hindsight, I am sorry I didn't make Mrs Fergus aware of the film." He added: "The film was not made for financial gain and nobody involved in the making of the film intends to profit from it."

Then accept your Oscar nomination, lauding in the Irish President's praise of your " Irish creativity, which fully deserves this recognition "

Sorry, not good enough ! :x

Literally just read about this, definitely something wrong with it, be it how he's gone about it, or even thought of doing it in the first place. Whatever your opinion in the end, he has given no thought of the feelings of the Bulger family.

The measurement of the quality of a work of art shouldn't be influenced by the feelings of people who are upset that the art even exists.

However, I agree it was really ******* stupid not to inform the mother.

Probably not. I should have said "parents".

Thing is, if the filmmakers gave an outline to the parents about what they wanted to achieve, they may have got their blessing...

Very unlikely to have got their blessing but at very least he should have offered them the most fundamental courtesy. Not even the slightest thought for the feelings of the victims family.

There are books and films about child murders and child murderers. This is not unique to the Bulger family.

Yes but I remember it was such a shock when the news came out the children murdered a young child like they did.

I would have thought it would only have been the decent thing to do to talk to the parents about their proposal on the film.

Maybe because it happened quite close to home. I remember Mary Bell.

Every actor, cameraman, dubbing mixer, make-up applier, props supplier, studio lessor - none of them are being paid? They've all , every one, given their money back?

I absolutely understand his family members being offended, disgusted and any other emotion that they feel but I can’t bring myself to be offended on their behalf on this occasion. I am so into crime and the criminal mind, miscarriages of justice and all connecting factors to any criminal acts. But I do understand the anger that continues to simmer.

I think the main difference is that they are usually made years after the event. In this case immediate relatives including the parents are still alive, which in my opinion makes it a little insensitive.

Watched a few seconds of the trailer, but couldn't watch anymore.

I will have to simply go off the fact it was nominated that it is a well made/well acted short film. But that's not the issue.

But to not consult with the family, even if it would have meant he was under pressure to not make it or change the perspective, suggests to me he either doesn't understand, or doesn't care, what they are going through. They have to live with knowing the poor boy will have been terrified and wanted them, and they couldn't be there for him. His mum will forever live with what ifs, what if she hadn't gone shopping that day, what if he had been on reigns, what if she hadn't glanced away (I know how easily and quickly children can escape you). Through no fault of her own, she has to live with that.

Listened to an interview with a producer or director, didnt catch which, of this film on LBC just now. He said you can see the distress that venables and Thompson went through during their police interviews. How much distress did that little boy go through?

What sickens me is the thought that Venables and Thompson will be able to watch this film from the comfort of their anonymous, tax payer funded security protected home.

That little lad won't.

Isn’t the 30 minute film the enactment of the PACE interviews that were played in Court and in the ITV programme the night of the verdict? This film is more factual than dramatisation.

The Family seem to object because it focuses on the 10 year old perpetrators and doesn’t focus on their feelings.

I thought Venables was back inside. For downloading images of children.
