West Indies v England 1st test match
Probably for a minority on this board but...... anybody else looking forward to 14.00 and the first over at Kensington Oval, Barbados?
I'm shortly going to do all my daily chores so I can get a ringside seat (via SkySports). It seems the pitch is difficult to read so they'll be mulling over its features for a while before deciding on the final 11 to play. England, thankfully, have a fair few combinations to chose from & are well favourites "on paper".
I hope W Indies can put up a decent scrap but looking for an England series win and some decent batting candidates coming through for this summer's home tests v Australia (not forgetting Ireland of course).

Yes.
I'm looking forward to it.
It's the first "daytime" England Test series since I fully retired last autumn, so I won't have to wait to get home from work to watch it.

Yes will brighten up a cold, frosty day here in Newcastle.
A strong England side apart from the opening bats.

England should be favourites but we have a bad record against them over there.
Can of Red stripe or Rum to watch with? Put us on that sun drenched beach in stead of snowy Burnley.

Root is keeping his cards close to his chest and has said that he won't name his team until the toss.
I was looking earlier this morning where England Lions were playing next month as I knew that they were due in India and sure enough they are playing a test match whilst I am on holiday in Goa. Except it is a 14.5 hour bus drive away to the ground. The bus is described as a luxury double decker which will mean that it has windows and some seats but I have decided to give it a miss and spend the time on the beach.

I retired a fair few years ago but on days like this I still v much appreciate that. I used to leave home v 06.30, on cold mornings like this you really appreciate staying in bed whilst it warms up. Watching the tv cricket is another big bonus. It's the first "daytime" England Test series since I fully retired last autumn, so I won't have to wait to get home from work to watch it.

Re: West Indies v England 1st test match
Wife's special birthday this February so I arranged for us to go on a Caribbean cruise over her birthday, which coincidentally is Valentine's Day.
It didn't occur to me, back in October when I booked it, that England would be out there at the same time.
Then I discovered that, on the final day of the cruise, the ship will spend the whole day in Barbados and EUREKA England play the 2nd ODI on that very day !!!!.
Tickets booked and wife relaxed about coming to the game .... result.
Oh and I have joined the Barmy Army to complete the experience.

Re: West Indies v England 1st test match
I'll watch any form of Cricket but I especially enjoy Test Match Cricket, will be home for 3:30 so will be watching. My parents flew out this morning for 2 weeks, I think its their 3rd tour of the west Indies and their favourite of the test teams to visit.
I cant wait for the Lancashire league to start again so I can spend my weekends sat outdoors with a beer relaxing.

I understand why a spinner and not Broad looking at the pitch but why Rashid and not Leach has bemused me.

Re: West Indies v England 1st test match
This pitch has been prepared for tall, fast, bang it in to the pitch bowlers so I'm surprised Broad has missed out.
You would have to presume there's big spin expected.

According to Root Curran gives him a different bowling angle and strengthens the batting.

Re: West Indies v England 1st test match
You can't really drop Curran, because of his performances, but the question is, wouldn't it be better to have Broad, a specialist quick bowler, rather than Rashid, a second spinner.
Re: West Indies v England 1st test match
You have to look at the Windies bowling and ask "How short a tail do you need?" Foakes' batting says to me Broad should have been in the line up.

Agree Chobulous, but it also depends how our batsmen 1,2 and 3 perform. Should be interesting.

Re: West Indies v England 1st test match
Looks like that was a good toss to win. Not a lot in the wicket for pace or spin at the mo although there's been some swing. Curran has to do better with line & length when he bowls again but it looks like England are in for a lot of hard work today anyway.
My bookie is looking at 330 as the most probable 1st innings WI total at this point but it could all change this aft.

Windies session 89-1 at lunch,Campbell made 44 on debut, could be a long day in the field for England, pitch is good and England have to bat fourth it's vital that England's batsman score big in the 1st innings for once.

Re: West Indies v England 1st test match
Pitch is playing decent even if it looks poor. There’s a bit of bounce in there so will be interesting to see their genuine pace bowlers.
W Indies slightly in front, with two wickets a session par.
Jimmy bowled well but opposition usually wait until him and Broad are off before taking the other bowlers on. No Broad this time so more bowlers to have a go at.

Re: West Indies v England 1st test match
Not much in this pitch. Might be a bit of a slog for the seamers here.

In at the deep end. You can watch the action at the Kensington Oval from the swimming pool! Located in the party stand. Jammy Buggers

Two quick wickets for Stokes has brought us back into the game at 132-3.
Looks like we may have a shower out there soon.

Got to love the W Indies laid back style. Batting in a floppy hat in a Test match isn't seen anymore. Great stuff.
Well new ball taken now. Lids back on.

That Hetmeyer drop by Buttler is proving costly, could be decisive in changing the match.Need one of these two out before the close.

Re: West Indies v England 1st test match
BIG wickets for Jimmy right man at the right time again.
James Anderson and Stuart Broad have now taken a combined 1,000 Test wickets.
How on earth we are going to replace this duo i have no idea.
250-6 3 for the Burnley Lara now, different game all of a sudden.

And again. Now 7 down.
I like these Duke balls. They seemed to have given a decent contest between bat and ball all day.

England's day in the end.
350 about par. Plenty of batsman got in but the pitch seems to be getting quicker.
Their bowlers are faster so it should be a great day tomorrow.

Re: West Indies v England 1st test match
Restricted WI in the end but pretty much due to v good bowling from Jimmy & Ben Stokes. Curran was poor (I say that as a Surrey member with some fondness for the lad); pretty average from the two spinners (Root bowled OK though).
There was a lot more action on that 2nd new ball (hopefully its the ball rather than the strip getting livelier or it might be difficult batting for England tomorrow).

Re: West Indies v England 1st test match
First two sessions were fairly dull but Jimmy and the new ball soon changed all that. 359 ( i think ) for Jimmy and chance of another couple early tomorrow.

Jimmy bowled superbly throughout the day and fully deserved his four wickets. This could turn out to be a very interesting match if we don't bat well in our first innings.

They mentioned on the Sky commentary that (one of Jimmy's last 2 wickets) was his 100th outside Uk (was going to say England there but he probably got some at Sofia Gardens).

I think you're being slightly harsh on Curran, Lead Belly.
They're always going to target him when Jimmy is at the other end. Maybe not quick enough to open the bowling though.

Around another 15 on this tour and then 20 in the ashes.
I reckon 640/650 is within him.

Re: West Indies v England 1st test match
yes- thats right rather than my 100 misquote. They used to reckon he could only produce in home tests with swinging-friendly conditions but he's disproved that in recent years.200th test wicket away from home for Jimmy.
As per previous post, there's hope he'll get to 600 total wickets before he hangs up his boots. He has amazing natural athleticism & obviously works hard on his fitness - so there's a decent chance he'll reach that magnificent milestone.
