Eat in cafe prices

Was in Grand central in Birmingham yesterday and decided to stop for a cuppa and a cake. Found a lovely cafe with fantastic looking cakes but when I looked at thr prices I decided to go elsewhere. You could have a cake for £3.20 take out or £4.90 to eat in. £1.70 is over a 50% increase, how can they justify such an increase to just to sit at a table in the middle of a vast hall. And no I'm not a tight ass, I just refused tp pay it on principle.

It was cheaper if you sat in the 'wings'. Always dear for those prime central seats.

I presume washing your plates requires extra staff and costs.

Buy the cake as take away then go outside and look in through the window whilst eating cake.

It's a touch excessive, but everything has to be paid for, be it cutlery, cleaning, crockery, staff etc, plus the fact that you could potentially sit in that seat all day with your £4.90 cake thereby depriving the business of other people.

A cafe I go to locally is actually more expensive to eat out. An added 20p due to the bag and napkin.

Do you take your own bag and napkin?

Usually the uplift represents the VAT due on eating in rather than taking out (where the foods would be 0% if taken away), but that would only account for 64p of the extra charge!

On the cake:
Food served cold and taken away is zero rated on tax.
But if you want to eat that same slice of cake on premises 20% VAT is added.

Though most companies now do in/out pricing on all products.

I am no economic guru BUT if there were 30 tables, each able to sit 4 people in this 'vast' market hall and 30 individual people decided to partake of a slice of cake in-house and took 30-40 minutes to eat it....what happens should a group of 4 (or multiple groups) arrive and want a table thereby denying the establishment of a much more sufficient revenue.....

No windows, it was just an open space on a balcony in a massive indoor area. I could have got take away and eaten leaning on the balcony rail.

I'm aware of vat for eating in which is ridiculous in itself but still doesn't justify the other 30%+

I wondered why I always used to say eat out when at McDonalds as a youngster but eat in.

Must of been cheaper.

Depending how long ago you were a youngster, it may have been because once over, hot food to take out didn't have VAT but hot food to eat in, did.
