One of the nicest blokes you could ever wish to meet is 80 today - and he was a damn good player too

Great tribute,CT. During that golden era that you alluded to I was just a youngster going to the match with my dad on the bus from Haslingden. I've said it before but looking back I really was a very, very fortunate child to be able to witness that team in that era. Jimmy Robson was always there, ever reliable and feeding off others in the team. I remember the 5 goals he scored v Forest but my eldest brother (who is the same age as Jimmy) often recalls a very special goal Jimmy scored. The game was at Ewood Park in an FA Cup tie, scores were level at 1-1 and the game was moving towards a replay. We got a late corner and my brother told me he turned to some of his Rovers supporting mates that he was stood with and suggested that we might not need a replay yet. The corner came in, Jimmy rose like a salmon and bulleted the ball past their keeper for a winner. Get in! Happy birthday,Jimmy Robson.

Good read as usual Tony,
Who was our previous no 10 before Robbo became a regular?

What an illuminating article thanks Tony, another tremendous capture from the North East which our scouts were doing on a regular basis in those days.

Great article Tony
Remember as a 14 year old collecting autographs and Jimmy a young 20 ish player.
He signed every one I asked for in my Scrapbook of Football Monthly and” Soccer Specials “
Photographs along with Ray Pointer and John Connelly etc
Great memories of the late 50’s at Turf Moor.
As Tony says a really nice guy.
Many Happy Returns Jimmy

He's at every home game as well is Jimmy in the BL.

He'd be a rich man if he was 50 years younger.

I well remember him scoring those 5 goals against Forest. I was stood with my pal on the front railing behind the goals at the Bee Hole end. His first was a through ball from Mac, I think, which he ran on to and volleyed over the keeper into the roof of the net. That was very early on and we went on to knock 8 past them. Great days, watching football at its best.

Enjoyed that article. Lovely bloke is Jimmy and it is great to look back on an era when we were at our most successful in a game played on a much more level playing field than it is these days.

Wasn’t at the Forrest game but there is B/W film of highlights of the game on some videos that we could buy 10/15/20 years ago. The state of the pitches in those days was very evident.

Jimmy Mac's favourite team mate. He said he was always in the right place and that made it easy for him. He described him as vastly underrated.
Robbo is still about and great to talk with.
Happy birthday!

Happy birthday Jimmy, such a nice man. I used to play for Nelson Grammar School Old Boys and he took training in the old gym at was then Walton High.
He actually turned out in the same team as me when we were short, it was For NGSOB 3rd team on Swindon Pitch number two around 1980, i remember it well because one of the opposition players was being a right arse and jimmy said don't worry boys i'll sort it out. A couple of minutes later and a crafty elbow to the face, the player was substituted with blood coming down his nose. those old pro's certainly knew how to look after themselves. !!!

Jimmy and I served our apprenticeships with Webster Electrical whose retail shop was on St James' St with the contracting department behind.
We both worked on the installation of the Turfs first lot of floodlights among many other jobs.
He had training on most mornings during the season, so usually turned up at work after lunch.
I recall that the day before the '62 cup final, we were working at the Nurses home, now the Hospice, on Colne Rd.
As usual, Jimmy turned up at lunchtime and joined in our footy kick around in the yard there. He didn't hold back and played with his usual enthusiasm.
Of course, the following day he scored the 100th Wembley cup goal.
Happy birthday Jim.
I recollect happy memories of working with you and watching you on't Turf.
Since my illness, I can no longer see you at the Pike Hill Spar.
