Hugh Mcilvanney RIP
Veteran sports reported who covered most major sporting events like the 1966 World Cup had died aged 84. Used to enjoy his reporting.
RIP.

A good journalist, his gravelly Scottish voice was a joy to listen to.
Re: Hugh Mcilvanney RIP
Sad news. One of the best sports journalists ever.

He certainly was one of those recognised voices whenever you switched on the wireless (that's what it was called in those days) and sport was being discussed.
Only Brian Glanville and Pat Murphy left from "the good old days".

Yes, a terrific writer, very good at expressing the emotional side of sport as well as accurately describing events.
That Guardian obit links some "best of" articles, one being re the last fight (=death) of boxer Johnny Owen, superb piece of writing about a tragic event.

Absolutely out of the top drawer of sports journalists.
Knew his sports inside out, he had terrific descriptive powers and he had the common touch. He added so much to the sports he covered. I think football was his main interest.
RIP HM.

Re: Hugh Mcilvanney RIP
I dare say recognised as the best of the lot in journo circles. A great wordsmith - I remember a brilliant character assassination he wrote of Mourinho where he rebranded him ‘the specious one.’ I had to look up the meaning of the word at the time and year’s later it’s still most perfectly apt.

Agree with all the tributes above. Love the quote he made about Joe Bugner - “he had the physique of a Greek statue but fewer moves”.
