Food is generally safe to eat a few days after the use by date.

A while ago we found a mates dad's WWII parachute and survival kit in his loft, complete with tiny metal canisters of what I think were Benzadrine tablets.
50 years old and they still worked :D

Get it down ya!

Keep it in the freezer while after Brexit, you will make a fortune when were all starving, stick it on ebay with no reserve and watch it shoot up in price.

Depends where you kept it. If it's been sitting on top of the telly for two weeks, then bin it. If it's been in the fridge, then eat it. There are more preservatives than there are food in those things.

I suppose I've saved a lot of money. No more grocery bills. No mortgage to worry about or utility bills. Not a bad life, really. Oh...

All the salt in it will keep it in a barely edible state.

I disregard eat by dates, they're a guideline and to protect the manufacturer who err on the side of safety to ensure they never get sued. Never had a problem yet, ate stir fry last night that said eat be 25th, delicious :)

Eat it. Nothing wrong with it. The sell by dates and use by dates (different things by the way) are only a guide. General rule for me is if it looks okay and smells okay it's okay. Fill your boots. I've used sauces out of the cupboard inadvertantly that have been over a year (in one case over two) and nobody died.

With most foods, you can clearly tell they're off before they ever get dangerous. Milk smells, fruit goes brown, biscuits go soft, tins go rusty or swell up. Chicken and other meats are the obvious exceptions they're the ones you need to pay attention to the dates.

Food waste is a subject of great interest to me as I volunteer a couple days/week at my local Food Bank distribution centre and see the need first hand. That need has increased exponentially over the last few years…….. totally unacceptable in this day and age! Apparently Canada wastes more edible food per capita than any other country in the world, again…..totally unacceptable! We use the term “best before” date as opposed to “expiry” date, which causes some of the confusion as to the safe consumption of food. “Best before” indicates the product is at its prime freshness, the onus is on the consumer to decide if it’s usable after that date. It should go without saying particular attention be paid to dairy, meat, produce and fruit, unfortunately in this day and age, common sense is in short supply. Grocery stores are now reluctant to donate produce or meats to food banks due to the dreaded liability issues, preferring to throw it out. In the defense of grocery stores, over the last few years they have offered fresh meats at a deep discount as the they approach the “best before” date with a sticker saying “enjoy tonight” or similar language.
