Crouch in Claret, Riddance Vokesy?

As macca said on the other thread might have been OK a few years ago but not someone I'd like to have if chasing a game because that just leads to one game plan. Definitely different from what we have though

Been a much better player than he's given credit for, but at 38 and used sparingly by Stoke in a division below, seems an odd one to me.

4th choice of the bench when looking for a goal?

Not the worst choice (and another to say he's a lot better than he's given credit for) but surely we can do better?

Unless Che Adams is 9-foot tall, then surely it’s a step up.

Just about sums up our absolutely shambolic recruitment.

I sense that SD doesn’t want to totally lose that ability to throw on a big man to get on the end of a cross in the late stages of a game, but I’d imagine it would only be until be a deal to the end of the season to account for the loss of Vokes.

I've always liked Crouchy, I wouldn't want to spend money on him though, but he's an option. If given the choice between Wells and Crouch, I'd pick Crouch.

EDIT: I didn't realise this was in expense of Sam Vokes... Why have Peter Crouch for 12 months when we can have Vokes for another 3 years?

If this happens then all this “we won’t sign anyone just for the sake of it” is nonsense!! We’ve got someone to come off the bench and cause problems with his height.... it’s Sam Vokes!!

If he signs then we’ve moved on from signing footballer snow and we’re signing GIFs instead.

To be fair, crouch would cause more problems than vokes in those circumstances

Doesn't he still live in and commute from London every day? Even taking out of the equation his age and inability to get a game at a struggling C'ship club, this is worrying.

We have Paddy but the longer term view is surely to upgrade Vokes, if we can’t do that this window then you’d expect that investment to be made in the summer. So that is where Crouch might be a stop-gap.
Sam’s been great for us and I’ll be proper sorry to see him go but I don’t think he seized his chance this season when Wood was out of form and he warrants first team football. If we can get £8m in for him that seems a pretty good deal to me. Hopefully though - it gives us the freedom to swoop for Adams!!

I completely agree with you that it’s about longer term and if Sam goes we need to replace with better quality... I just personally don’t think that person is crouchy but it’s up to Dyche I guess

he doesn't need the chequebook for this one though does he...

I'm not against signing Crouch, on a short term deal as cover if Vokes goes, but it must be backed up with a quality signing in the summer window (perhaps there's agreements in place with other targets who wont/cant come till the summer..???)

Who we gonna get in the summer? Ricardo Fuller. Or Glenn Whelan. Perhaps Rory Delap.

He wont be playing for free.

And lets say Wood gets injured. Acl. Or returns to his early season poor form. Especially without vokes oushing him. Who would you rather have to come in. Crouch or Vokes. Honest answer!

Bloody Vokes of course. But the thing everyone seems to forget is what the players want and what Dyche wants for future planning. Dyche doesn’t see Vokes as long term, so is letting him go

Taken from Crouch’s book, “I was once again perfectly happy with the Salaries being offered.....They were all championship clubs: Portsmouth, Burnley, Preston. Burnley manager arranged to meet halfway between Turf Moor and Loftus Road, which turned out to be a service station on the M6. Being sold the club, being told how big their ambitions were while sitting in a Little Chef seemed a touch ironic, although I did love Stan.”

Just thinking if he had bought him the big breakfast he may have signed.

Crouch is one of those players that Burnley fans / UTC posters take an instant dislike to even before he has pulled on the claret jersey.

Similar to the likes of Tony Philliskirk, Lennie Johnrose (took a while for some to warm to as he played for the club down the road), Ross Wallace, Scott Arfield (Huddersfield message board said he was no good is which enough for some UTC posters) and Joe Hart.

Based on his recent record at Stoke, it looks like 90 minutes is beyond him. On that basis, he can’t possibly be seen as a replacement for Vokes.

We weaken our striking options with this swap.
