Walking Football

Post by Holmeclaret » Fri Feb 01, 2019 9:39 am

I do a bit of swimming and pilates to try to keep fit but I'm thinking of taking this up with a local over 50's club. Anyone on here tried it? How have you found it?

If you live locally and not stuck in the snow come down to the gym' at the back of the ground at 12-o-clock there's a session on 'til 1 and you can see what it's all about.

Not local, I'm afraid but thanks anyway.
I suppose the only way to see, as you suggest, is to actually experience it.

Not to put anyone off, as this is hearsay anecdote from my neighbour (and I haven't actually played it) but he has had more injuries from walking football than when he played normal football in a local 6 a side team and he is 70 so maybe knocks are felt more !!!

Im 57 and have played Sunday football all my life until this season when dodgy knees have finally killed me off..even as a centre half. Played a couple of 90 minutes this season with much pain and slow recovery time afterwards. However I have started going to a Friday afternoon Walking Football session at Barnet FC (The Hive) and really been enjoying it. There are a lot of blokes in their 50s and 60s who, like me, have been frustrated at the ageing process making "proper" football difficult to get a game in but able to cope with it. I was sceptical initially but have found it decently competitive and of a fair standard.
Key to enjoying it are "
- having a ref who will call up "running" and penalise it. Otherwise some peoples' definition of walking really pushes the boundaries !
- remembering that people cannot run onto your passes ! Weighting passes properly is really important.
- realising that it's more difficult to go past people when you can't run..even when they are coming towards you and you think "I'll just push it past him here"
- recognising that it's pretty much a non-contact sport. A bit like defending away to Man United with Jon Moss refereeing.

Games tend to be low scoring as the goals are small and because of the third point above. Awareness and accurate passing tends to offer the best chance of success.

Anything that helps me continue playing football until I drop has to be a good idea.

Paddy1882 it's run by BFC in the community and it's for over 50's. there's two sessions, 11 'til 12 on Mondays which gets a bit crowded and 12 'til 1 on Fridays.

I play twice a week and would highly recommend it. Running is cheating and it is supposed to be a non/minimal contact sport, depending upon which rules your venue plays to FA or WFA. If you have a choice of venue go and have a try, we tend to play the 7 a side game but some clubs prefer to play 6 or 5 a side. Rules are easy to learn however not all officials ref to them! For a couple of quid it's great fun to play again!

Perhaps a rubber band around the thighs would eliminate 'running'
