Cock...
Who as any tales of that Local wordsmith Kenneth shapcock of Burnley... Must surely be in his late fifties/sixties who often wrote his piece on Burnley F.C. Got talking to him recently at central gym Burnley in between his reps on the bench.pressing 80 kilos some feat for a man his age.... He told me how finally after all these years he'd realised how Bob Lord was indeed correct on all matters Burnley and he'd got him all wrong.any one know this once outspoken gentleman?

It think he's called Ken Shapcott, (sp), founder of the Bob Lord Out Brigade around 1975/76.

Yes that's the chap....I thought cock would capture the attention. Often wrote for the local rag. I must say while I enjoyed Malcolm Hibbert and his Ramblings of all things BFC old cocky was a literary genius in comparison ...what a quiet and unassuming man who tells it quite how it is. Local Newspapers on the decline I miss Hibberts weekly moans on some thing quite trivial.. Though reading Kenneth was like poetry in motion...if you follow.gawthorpe_view wrote:It think he's called Ken Shapcott, (sp), founder of the Bob Lord Out Brigade around 1975/76.

Re: Cock...
I went to one of his meetings at The Broadsword, researchers from Granada TV were there looking for a story to run with about the campaign to get Bob out.
Probably a bit later than '76 but not much.

I asn't got any tales to tell, sorry.
I have known Ken Shapcott for several decades and I have never heard him referred to as 'old cocky'
I believe he no longer works on the Cricket Club car park.

Re: Cock...
Shappy has certainly never been a House fan but always been a character. I remember Burnley playing East Lancs when their pro ( pretty sure it was Kerry Okeefe) downed a simple catch. Shappy casually strolled onto the field and presented him with a bucket. Great stuff. He is around my age so I would say he will be about 70.

He's responsible for my only appearance in a crown court. We were standing together on the terraces at Elland Road and he got into a bit of a scuffle with a Leeds fan. The coppers arrived and hooked him out. To cut a long story short I and a couple of others had to go as witnesses, twice actually because he appealed the first verdict.

Re: Cock...
You would best describe Ken as a Character and a likeable rogue in his younger days. Totally opposite of his brother, who was in the police. I’m not sure if Ken went to Burnley Grammer School.
I remember he enjoyed spending his time in the betting shops. Always keen to wind up the opposition fans, with his banter, be it at a cricket or football match. Whenever I’ve met Ken, you know you won’t just be saying hello and walking bye, (which I don’t mind with him), he loves to stop and talk about the Clarets.
If your reading this Ken, I hope your keeping well.

Yes he was in good spirits...in Wetherspoons. I thought there was a copper called Shapcott...in the sixties he'd clip you and that was that.Bfc wrote:You would best describe Ken as a Character and a likeable rogue in his younger days. Might be wrong but I think Shapcott is nearer 80 than 70.

We always have a chat and a laugh when we cross paths!
He was also the one who unmasked local cricketer on here.
Hoping I’ll see him this season for a catch up.
Although he did once tell me he’d never watch another Burnley cricket match when they announced Ocki as pro I think he changed his tune when Burnley won the league.

Re: Cock...
If the article is right he must be 75.
That feels right to me. I remember listening to him on away coaches in the seventies. In this days if two coaches went we were a crowd

I always thought Shappy was about the same age as me and I am 76 next week.
Re: Cock...
Bit of a strange introduction from the OP but for me Mr Shapcott is a total legend. Used to have us crying with laughter when he decided he wanted to hold court in whatever pub we were in. Not shy isn’t our Ken. Great to hear contributions about him but he will be hysterical about possibly being 60 and tbh I’m more surprised but delighted that he is still alive on a number of levels. Give him my regards if any of you see him.
Re: Cock...
He was watching Burnley CC at Littleborough last Sunday. I don't know him personally but my 3 BCC mates who came over for the game obviously know him very well judging by the amount of p*ss taking that was going on. The picture above was being bandied about!!

Re: Cock...
Many years ago we watched Burnley CC at home v Rishton who had Allan Donald in their side at the time.
Allan came out to bat and was promptly out without scoring - I remember Ken taking great delight in repeatedly bellowing "Donald Duck" from the balcony of the pavilion/bar as the legendary former South African international fast bowler trudged off the pitch to howls of laughter from the spectators

Good one Hampstead.
Re: Cock...
For home games he tends to not go on the Turf but stay in the Cricket club.
You can visit him after the game
He used to tell some great tales in the back of Transit vans in the late 70s

By coincidence strolled into the Big Window this morning.. and sat at a Table where they were in full flow regards Ken and his exploits and brought up this particular thread. He was in Wetherspoons apparently this morning...so he's fighting fit by all accounts. But still a little disappointed on being short changed by some Lower house legend now departed.....He's held in high regard "By all accounts" still.Woody9229 wrote: ↑Thu Apr 20, 2023 7:29 pmBit of a strange introduction from the OP but for me Mr Shapcott is a total legend. Excellent memory Vintage - this was 1996 and not only was it a duck, it was a first ball dismissal - clean bowled by a lad called Waqas Amin.Vintage Claret wrote: ↑Thu Apr 20, 2023 8:22 pmMany years ago we watched Burnley CC at home v Rishton who had Allan Donald in their side at the time.
