Fred Pickering - RIP

Post by ClaretTony » Sun Feb 10, 2019 2:34 pm

Just read that former Blackburn and Everton centre forward Fred Pickering has passed away. He was in the Blackburn team alongside Mike England and Keith Newton that won the FA Youth Cup in 1959, beating a West Ham team in the final who included Bobby Moore and Geoff Hurst. He was 78.

Good England record - three caps, five goals.

Yes a converted fullback, I recall him being replaced by Reg Blore or Louis Bimpson at Rovers which didn't please the natives!

I saw him play several times, a good, old fashioned centre forward, not without a degree of skill. Rip

Good player, moved to Everton for a big fee as I remember. RIP Fred.

Just checked out his wiki page. Better than 1 in 2 for Rovers & Everton, over 8 years.

Harry Catterick controversially left him out of Everton's 1966 FA Cup winning team and replaced him with Mike Trebilcock : turned out to be a smart move.

He was a good player no doubt about that. Not bad when you can have a youth team with him alongside England and Newton.
