A well deserved honour for Pilky, an outstanding player for us in the '59/'60 Champions team.

I saw very little of him Roy, only a few games in 1960/61 when, by all accounts, he was nothing like the player he’d been.Royboyclaret wrote:A well deserved honour for Pilky, an outstanding player for us in the '59/'60 Champions team.

One outstanding game that will live long in the memory was the first leg against Hamburg in the European Cup.ClaretTony wrote:I saw very little of him Roy, only a few games in 1960/61 when, by all accounts, he was nothing like the player he’d been.
A special night lit up by Pilky.

Any insight or thoughts why two of the top scorers Agyei and Chakwana have been benched?

Agyei took quite a few knocks v Liverpool at Bamber Bridge on Monday so maybe just needs a bit of a rest.ClaretLoup wrote:Any insight or thoughts why two of the top scorers Agyei and Chakwana have been benched?

Well done lads - sounds like all 6 goals were scored at the Pilky end.
Brian would have enjoyed that (even the Bolton goals).

Was it against Bolton that last time we played there was a few sending offs and a bit of bad blood?

Does Benson look like the next to break through what with his bench appearance the other week? Good player?

The shoots of recovery for our youth system at last,McNeil has shown that it's possible to break into the 1st team squad, and this must give encouragement to all the others.

It was. N’Guessan wrongly sent off on a stretcher and made his comeback tonight.Cleveleys_claret wrote:Was it against Bolton that last time we played there was a few sending offs and a bit of bad blood?

Maybe one day we will be half way up this league because 6 or more of the squad are on loan in the Championship

Re: Bolton v Burnley - U23 latest from the Pilky Stand
I don’t like making any sort of predictions for young players but he impressed me when he came in on trial last season. He has a bit of Arsenal quality to him.jedi_master wrote:Does Benson look like the next to break through what with his bench appearance the other week? Good player?
Breaking through is difficult though so will see how it goes with him.
Had a chat with Pash and I said the highest praise I could give McNeil is that I no longer think of him as the young lad in the team. He got his chance and how well he’s taking it.
Benson is only just 19 but he certainly impresses.

Only Dunne (Sunderland) & Koiki (Swindon) out on loan other than Mitchell (Linfield) & Massanka (club in Belgium).mdd2 wrote:Maybe one day we will be half way up this league because 6 or more of the squad are on loan in the Championship

Re: Bolton v Burnley - U23 latest from the Pilky Stand
This maybe of interest to some.....In Brian's own words.....
".......Harry Potts called me into his office, he says at first 'there's some teams interested in you, including Everton, Preston, Blackpool & Bolton'. He said I had a choice where to go, but I said no, I'm alright, things are good here and I'm happy. I'm playing well and I'm scoring. Everything's okay here. Harry then said ' Well, put it this way the Chairman's agreed terms with Bolton, you'll have to speak with him'.
So I tried to get hold of Bob Lord but everytime I attempted to contact him I was told he wasn't available. In the end I had no choice but to go to Bolton......"
That pretty much summed up Bob Lord in that when he was sure he had a replacement (this time it was Gordon Harris), he would cash in on a saleable asset. Remarkably Brian scored two goals in that home leg against Hamburg in the European Cup and was sold before the second leg in Germany. For the record Harris scored our only goal in the second leg in Germany and went on to have a successful career with Burnley.
However, Pilky will always be a legend at Turf Moor, not least for scoring one of our goals in that famous win at Maine Road that clinched our title win in the '59/'60 season.

Re: Bolton v Burnley - U23 latest from the Pilky Stand
When you look back it seems incredible that a player can score two goals in a European Cup quarter final first leg and be sold before the second leg, even though they were eight weeks apart. He was the first player we sold after I started watching, but you had no choice when the decision was made to sell.
340 games for us, 77 goals, England international - scorer of the first at Maine Road (too often forgotten like Neil Grewcock's against Orient) - says it all about Pilky really. And, a smashing bloke too although sadly now dealing with dementia.

Re: Bolton v Burnley - U23 latest from the Pilky Stand
It certainly does seem incredible although given it was Bob Lord running the club, perhaps not as incredible as first thought. I was fortunate enough to see Pilky play many times and he was one of my Dad's favourite players...in fact after he had been transferred to Bolton, one Saturday when Burnley were some distance away, and Bolton were at home, my dad took me to Burnden Park 'cos he wanted "to see how Pilky's getting on."ClaretTony wrote:When you look back it seems incredible that a player can score two goals in a European Cup quarter final first leg and be sold before the second leg, even though they were eight weeks apart.
