400k a week for Ramsey
I didn't think I could be shocked at the money thrown about in football anymore. But 400k a week for Aaron Ramsey takes the biscuit.
They're so far removed from reality and from the fans that pay to watch them, it genuinely puts me off the game.

I can just about accept players like Messi and Ronaldo getting crazy money, those two are exceptional talents, and no doubt bring a huge amount of commercial revenue to their club/clubs in the latter's case, but Ramsey is a pretty decent midfielder, certainly no world beater and i can't see Juve fans flocking to buy his shirt or other merchandise.

£100 million a season to spend and we can't even sign a free agent!!!
Sack the board, utter lack of ambition.

Re: 400k a week for Ramsey
According to other reports he’s not even on that - more like £250k, which seems more plausible.
Ornstein, the journo who broke the news is fed info by Arsenal. Makes sense that they would want to make it seem like they couldn’t match Juve’s offer when the reality is that Ramsey had no intention of staying.

Re: 400k a week for Ramsey
I suspect this will happen more and more with these soon to be out of contract players.
Yes, Aaron Ramsey is being paid £400,000 per week but let's assume he were under contract and Juventus had to pay a transfer fee of, say, £30m. That's probably conservative in today's whacky market but on a 4 year contract that's the equivalent to circa £144,000 per week. Increase that transfer fee to £50m and it's the equivalent of £240,000 per week.
That's quite possibly a reason why these astronomical salaries are paid to players like Ramsey who are signed on a free (yes, he probably has been paid a signing on fee, but nothing like as much as people may think if he's on £400,000 per week).
Mind-blowing and completely mad, but a glimpse of what's to come, I'm afraid.

Re: 400k a week for Ramsey
When you see the income of the top clubs why shouldn’t the players, who generate the revenue, get a decent wedge?
These are the elite of the elite. Just like your rock gods they fill stadiums.
I’d rather they got it than the owners.
BTW although he’s a diving twohat he is an exceptional goalscoring midfielder.

£1.6 million a month. Does anyone know if they have a 50% tax band in Italy or is it even higher. The italian treasury must be rubbing their hands together.

Overrated and over here for the time being, if someone is daft enough to pay these outlandish money then they obviously have to much for their own good.

there used to be a 2 year grace period around Europe for tax on a new immigrant (don't know if it still stands) will still have to pay tax here though if he keeps his passportwhich I think is less than Italykaratekid wrote:£1.6 million a month. How many players are though? He adds a different dimension to their midfield and they’ve not payed a penny in transfer fees for him.evensteadiereddie wrote:Ramsey's the same standard of signing as Ronaldo ? Wow !

Re: 400k a week for Ramsey
No-one denies that the players generate the big bucks, and they should be well paid, what many posters are questioning is he worth such a large salary.Tricky Trevor wrote:When you see the income of the top clubs why shouldn’t the players, who generate the revenue, get a decent wedge?

I'd take issue with your last sentence he's a diving twohat that's true,as for him being an exceptional goalscoring midfielder,i beg to differ he had a very good return in 2013-14,when he hit double figures in the PL alone, but this one campaign apart he's been average at best, added to that he has a questionable injury history.
Re: 400k a week for Ramsey
It's a common trade off when a player is going for free, since the player ultimately decides where he goes. A good few top clubs were in for Ramsey. If De Bruyne was available for free this coming summer he'd be offered a hell of a lot more.Spijed wrote:He's now going to earn more than Kevin De Bruyne. I know which player I'd prefer in my team.
Of course you'd rather have De Bruyne in your team, but he was an enormously bigger investment for City than Ramsey is for Juventus.
Re: 400k a week for Ramsey
I'd also like to reiterate that the figure of £400k almost certainly won't be accurate. Not even close.

It is. There's been quite a few threads on agents recently, and one of the conventions of transfer dealings they've managed to worm into football is rolling the transfer fee into a salary package where the player is on a free. Making them millions in the process. Why is that not madness? There's a market value for the player for which the selling club are compensated, and a parallel wage value for his services at the new club. Where there isn't a need to compensate the selling club, I don't see it as a natural step to pay the player (and agent) 200% more or whatever it works out at for the same services/ability you're getting on the pitch. It's become normal, but it isn't right.

Good luck to the lad.
If you can negotiate a deal like that then congrats. Enjoy it whilst he has a career.

Re: 400k a week for Ramsey
Fair play to him. As someone mentioned, not paying a transfer fee allows the player to command a bigger wage. I'm not sure why this happens, but it does seem to be the case.
Stagnated under Wenger and had a few injuries keeping him out at times. Versatile, sometimes to his own detriment. Always thought he should be in the Arsenal team week in week out. This move could rejuvenate him at a crucial time in his career. I think he'll do very well there.
Its no more obscene than top music or film stars or even business moguls. He has shown he is capable of being one of the top midfielders in the world and why should football be any different.

Re: 400k a week for Ramsey
I'm guessing Juventus haven't looked at his injury record then.
Re: 400k a week for Ramsey
I think he's a good player.
Whether I think he's worth 400k a week is irrelevant - Juve can afford it
I'm amazed people are still getting upset by transfer fees and wages

Re: 400k a week for Ramsey
It’s got to the stage where if someone was paid £1million per day you’d hardly butt an eyelid. Becoming a bit obscene and distasteful. Clearly clubs like Man City and Madrid have a never ending supply of money and can pay this but how many clubs can ? It looked as though the Sky Money was levelling off but maybe the worldwide audiences and subscriptions are rising even if not in the UK. Even Chelsea can’t compete with the likes of ManCity and it makes you wonder if backers like Abramovich will get bored with it.

Re: 400k a week for Ramsey
I'd say domestically revenue has probably peaked or levelled (at a guess), but there's so much growth in the middle and far east I can't see a bubble bursting for a while.
It's not that I'm "upset", it's just part and parcel of a changing sport from the one I grew up loving, and it's a bit of a shame. I don't blame Aaron Ramsey for a second of course, I'd take whatever was on offer too!
