Declan Rice - National team change
Bit of a difficult one, but can understand why he has made the decision once you read through his statement as he is mixed nationality.

He's English and should represent England.
I could qualify for Ireland given I also had an Irish grandfather...but wouldn't if I had his talent.

That is a big blow for Irish football supporters, who have been counting on this lad turning out for them in the future.

Not sure what to say but it's very hard to put it into words without swearing .
He has made his choice but why did it take him six months to say he wanted to play for England when Southgate came calling .

To be fair to him, even though he’s English, he still more Irish than half of their current team.

Re: Declan Rice - National team change
Must be a tough choice for him and thats why its taken so long. Not to mention so many people in his ear. Ultimately he was born here. Raised her. Lives here. Plays here. So while he played for irish youths, how many kids stay loyal to their local club never mind another country.
Ultimately he has more chance of winning things and more exposure with england. And thats going to play a big part.
Its not like he was born and raised in dublin by irish parents.

I had totally forgotten about that - it's up there with Le Tournoi

Republic of Ireland are as bad as I've seen them in over 30 years. You would only choose them if you are an average footballer.
I'm not sure if this lad is good enough to play for England but caps are handed out pretty easy these days.

This doesn’t sit well with me for a number of reasons but rules is rules as they say even though rule is an arse!! I think though the Irish have stolen a number of players off the North so I guess you reap what you sow.

Look lets face it it's all down to money . Yer Man Gold at West Ham says he is the next Bobby Moore turned his head and I am sure his agent had a good poke at it also says you will be an England Captain , think of the money Dec ...
The only thing I smile about is the Jack Grelish or Gooulish whatever his name is he was way big and Ireland would have only held him back and decided England was who he was going to play for . Love yer Jack ohhh what are you doing these days .

Do you want to go to an international tournament every 2 years or go on holiday.
Seems an easy choice for a professional footballer, surprised it took more than 5 minutes to decide.

Re: Declan Rice - National team change
A big blow no doubt, mixed views over here some wishing him well, others say he's let us down. It has sparked a debate as to why we aren't producing our own players here, where are the Giles, Brady, Roy Keane, Robbie Keane, Duff etc, why are we chasing a player like Nathan Redmond. Hopefully it will put pressure on the FAI to start taking domestic football and youth development seriously. On a positive note,at the same time Rice was declaring for England a young 19 year old from Co Clare was being called into the Inter Milan squad for a Europa League game.

Re: Declan Rice - National team change
I work with an Ireland fan who travels home and away to every game. The Irish are not necessarily cheesed off by the fact that a player can switch allegiance; it's the fact that Declan Rice has already won three senior caps with the Republic and engaged in the usual badge-kissing and fist-pumping associated with someone who is committed to the cause. By that measurement, Rice has proven to be a fraud. It also doesn't reflect well on him that he's taken six months to make a decision.

Look at the teams that played in the Nations League and went out. We beat Spain and Croatia, Belgium, Italy, Germany and France are all out, and Portugal, Switzerland and Holland are in the Semis.edison wrote:I had totally forgotten about that - it's up there with Le Tournoi

La Tournoi was 4 teams in a warm up tournament for the World Cup 98. Hardly a comparison mate!

It was Chip, but it spawned the greatest free kick goal I have ever seen. Worth having that tournament just to see that.

Re: Declan Rice - National team change
I would have thought it did reflect well. Clearly it wasn't an easy decision. He isn't Irish, but has formed enough of an allegiance to Ireland that it isn't easy to leave it behind. (Of course, the decision may be simply whether he thinks he's good enough for England, or whether he should "settle for" a team where he has a better chance of playing.)Sausage wrote:... Re: Declan Rice - National team change
The system is fairly easy to abuse, I suppose. France seem to have a regular supply of foreign nationals.
However, it is better than the one in rugby. Declan rice is a lot more English than either vunipola, Dylan Hartley, Ben teo, Nathan Hughes etc etc. As the nationality abuse is seemingly abused more by the 'big' nations, I can't see it changing much.

Re: Declan Rice - National team change
From my point of view he shouldn’t be allowed to change his mind after he has played a full international whether it be a friendly or not but the rules say he can so in essence he has done nothing wrong. For me though he has listened to his agent more than his Family or heart I could be wrong but his decision was made purely on a financial career reason. Although understandable this has to be wrong surely international football shouldn’t be about career or finances. It is about where you were born and grew up and more importantly where you are emotionally tied for me in his case it is Ireland because of his Grandparents. At the end of the day it has to be his decision and we should accept some of the abuse he is getting us disgusting.
Re: Declan Rice - National team change
I very much doubt that. He was born in England. He was brought up in England. His mother was English; his mother's parents were English. His father was born in England, brought up in England, and chose to live in England; chances are he felt himself to be English. But two of Rice's four grandparents were Irishm, and no doubt he went to visit them occasionally in school holidays - but is that enough to make him emotionally tied to Ireland ahead of England?JarrowClaret wrote:F... This story is really the other way round. Young and talented English lad, whom the Irish tried (within the rules) to sneak into the Irish side because of remote links to Ireland. They nearly, but not quite, succeeded.

Good point made over here. Apart from his 3 senior caps he has pulled on an Ireland jersey over 30 times. Taking the shirt off the back of a young Irish lad who could have done with the experience.
International sport is being ruined with these situations. The number of Kenyans winning gold medals for middle East nations is beyond a joke.

Just because his first name is “Declan” does not an Irishman make. I know the Paddys like to cling on to things like this, but come on.

International sport is a bit pointless anyway now. There won't be many youngsters in the future with ties to only one country. People move around the world more, their parents do, they'll be educated in more than one place and they'll be playing sport while they do.Tricky Trevor wrote:International sport is being ruined with these situations. I like a World Cup as much as anyone, but it's just for a month of daft boozy tribalism. Burnley players don't come from Burnley, once we accept international football is much the same it'll be fine. We could even have a transfer window between major tournaments.

Past social media comments have surfaced where he comments on his support for the IRA. Wonder if he’ll get the same treatment as James McLean from fans?

Andre Grey was banned for 4 games for being homophobic, despite apologising and saying he wasn’t, and he was young (20). Wonder how long a ban Declan will get for supporting a terrorist organisation?

None. Because he was a child and no one got hurt (except a few trigger kittens a few years later).
