Alas that season saw relegation to division 4 as it was then.

Looks a better non-league away day than the one we 'enjoyed' to Telford; that game would've been later, around 1986, maybe 87? I remember it being bloody cold and losing (deservedly!) 3 - 0.

It was the manager who cost us that season. Totally inept and how on earth he was ever allowed to do the job was beyond everyone but those who gave him the job.

Interesting to read in the Fulham match-day programme that Neil Grewcock cites John Benson as a major positive influence on his career.

He was. He played him in the first team. But it takes some believing that a team with that quality of player could be relegated to the fourth division.

Benson was the manager who told Brian Flynn he had no future and then signed Mark Rhodes from Rotherham on loan. He didn’t make many signings but to Rhodes you can add Geoff Palmer, Les Lawrence & Joe Neenan. It was unforgivable that we went down. Then Teasdale told Tommy Hutchison that he was replacing the sacked Benson only for Hutchison to hear on radio that we’d appointed Martin Buchan.

What a dreadful period it was for Burnley.

As for the Penrith game. Keith McNee was reporting for the Lancashire Evening Telegraph but also doing the Radio Lancs updates. The only problem was that the only phone in the ground was in the managers office with no view of the pitch. Keith phoned on the Friday and asked if I’d stand with him and keep an eye out for any action he missed while making the calls for radio. He missed three goals so the descriptions of them for the paper were mine.

How on earth did Penrith ever reach the first round.

One other footnote: Barry Powell scored two of the goals. His only other Burnley goals were two in a friendly against Great Harwood. All four were past the same goalkeeper.

Tony - I thought Joe Neenan came on loan that season, and was then signed by Buchan the following summer. I could be mistaken though. I always thought Neenan was better than Hansbury but I was only ten years old at the time so my judgement probably wasn't the best.

As for Les Lawrence, words fail me. I've got his autograph somewhere. He simply signed 'les' with a lower case l, proving he was as sh!t off the pitch as he was on it.

Bottom of the NW Counties League according to the commentator, so, I'm guessing, Level 7 at that time, equivalent of Northern Prem today. There's usually 2 or 3 teams from that level in Round 1. Having said that, level 7 was a lot bigger then than now with the various feeder leagues. They looked pretty hapless, although they all looked thinner than Kevin Hird.

My favourite bit of commentary was the classic, and probably unique “it’s not easy when you’re 7 – 0 down at home in a cup tie”!!

Probably the biggest game and crowd they've had in Penrith unless they've hosted Carlisle
My mates went to the game and they still talk about what a good day out it was and its in our history of being joint highest score with Darwin.
i have sampled these games in the cup at these grounds Stafford Rangers,Telford
Scarborough always felt like one of those cup games and we always got beat as did Maidstone some of the best days out at them little clubs so compact it felt like there was 5,000 or 6,000 away following even though it was always quite healthy say you would be lucky if we actually won I am sure it was for the beer and bants most the time.

This was the third time in four years that Penrith had reached the first round proper. The first time, they actually beat a League team, Chester, before losing to Doncaster in the second round and the following year they lost to Hull.

I know the commentator, John Walsh. He still reports on Workington for Radio Cumbria. He's a good bloke, I'll mention this to him next time I see him.

I’ll forever be grateful for this game given I’m unlikely to ever see us score nine goals again. Had I been a little bit older I’d have seen the 9-0 against New Brighton.

Memories fade but I seem to recall Wayne Biggins being man of the match that day without scoring a single goal.

It was a good memory. My trouser belt broke so I and I was able to buy a new one there, plus we had a lovely fish, chip and curry sauce in a restaurant before the game.

We went one better then England that week, who won in Turkey 8-0.

We also had David Miller playing at right back. We thought he was a real talent but it never seemed to materialise.

Les Lawrence was brought in because we were crying out for a big centre forward - presumably we couldn't afford better. We got good crosses in from Grewcock and Hutchison, but Biggins, Taylor and weren't suitable for that. We of course missed Billy Hamilton.

Some thoughts... Burnley's pre-kick off knocking about looks just like we used to do up Towneley... Hansbury runs exactly like how I remember Alan Stevenson running... and the commentator can't, like many fans when he played for us, pronounce Tommy Hutchison's surname correctly. The forum pedants nowadays would have great sport taking the rise out of anybody who wrote Hutchinson.

Flynn was there at the start of the season but Benson wouldn't start him

Derek Scott, felt undervalued, could get a better deal elsewhere so did.

Neil Whatmore anyone

Steve Kennedy, given a chance, got injured at Hull and kept on. Career defining injury, so sad

Having got rid of Bond in the summer, Benson wasn't the right choice. He had the centre backs, he had the strikers, he had the wingers, he had Kevin Hird. He failed big time.

Joe Gallagher was on the books but wasn't risked.

The North West Counties league at that time is about where the North West Counties League is now - at the bottom of the pyramid. It was level 8 then, I think, and would be level 9 now because of the extra division in the Conference. But it was more or less equivalent, regardless of the numbers.

In those days Conference sides didn't automatically get to the fourth qualifying round, which made it easier for lower league sides to avoid them right through the qualifying.

Not under any circumstances could Benson ever have been the right choice. He had a squad of players more than capable of taking us up but the whole season was a disaster for which he had to take most of the blame.
