Valentines Day ..
Under the rule of Emperor Claudius Gothicus, Rome was involved in many unpopular and bloody campaigns. The emperor had to maintain a strong army, but was having a difficult time getting soldiers to join his military leagues. Claudius believed that Roman men were unwilling to join the army because of their strong attachment to their wives and families.
To get rid of the problem, Claudius banned all marriages and engagements in Rome. Valentinus, realising the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret.
When Valentinus’ actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death. Valentinus was arrested and dragged before the Prefect of Rome, who condemned him to be beaten to death with clubs and to have his head cut off. The sentence was carried out on February the 14th A.D. 269.

Re: Valentines Day ..
I gave my girlfriend some roses this morning.
She'd ate them all by lunch.

Re: Valentines Day ..
Last time I played the Mrs at snooker she was winning.
I had an easy Brown ball or a more difficult pink after potting the last red.... She leant across the table and told me to hurry up I was taking too much time over my shot.... I told her I was in a quandary and not to lean over the table in the Snooker club because she wasn't wearing underwear, & I couldn't decide between the Pink or Brown.

Re: Valentines Day ..
Last year I omitted to buy the obligatory flowers / card on the day and was given the silent treatment. It has its benefits.
The following day I popped into Aldi (nothing but the best for my other half) and bought a dozen red roses at half price and placed them in a vase in the dining room. Later I mentioned to the lady wife that she was a bit quiet and got a bit of grief before, I asked if she didn't like her flowers.
She hadn't been into the dining room for a couple of days so was quite, shall we say shocked and amazed, to see the roses in full splendour when I told her they were there. Not wishing to detract from her joy, I chose not to mention that I'd only just put them there.
Happy day, though I didn't repeat it this year.

Re: Valentines Day ..
Perhaps that's why I put 'Arrivederchi Roma' as my Valentine's Day tune choice on the other Valentine thread. Very interesting and quite by chance, as I' ve never heard this story:

Great tune, I might as well put it on this thread as well, seeing there's a causal link. The lyrics actually fit the OP story.
