Climate strike: schoolchildren walk out to protest
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-47250424 in one sense you have to admire their principals, but how many of these pupils are regularly dropped at the school gate by their parents in gas-guzzlers.
Their four main demands are.
1)The government should declare a "climate emergency":
I doubt any government will declare an emergency as this could cause unintentionally alarm.
2)It should also inform the public about the seriousness of the situation:
Most of the public are well informed already, hence the desire for cleaner fuel, and the phasing out of diesel engines, ongoing protests about fracking etc.
3)The national curriculum should be reformed to include "the ecological crisis":
I'm surprised such an important matter isn't already standard fare in schools.
4)The age of voting should be lowered to 16 so younger people can be involved in decision-making around environmental issues.
In Scotland the age of voting in Holyrood elections has been lowered to 16,turnout amongst the 16/17 year-old's wasn't that high.
TBH i'm not really sure what more politicians can do they have the Paris Climate Agreement, renewable energy is being heavily promoted, carbon emissions are also being clamped down on,the most likely driver of change will be technological advances,so that the older fossil fuels can be gradually reduced.
You have to wonder how many just fancied a jolly day off schoolwork,on the other hand if the teachers have any sense they could easily incorporate this action into a class discussion or other coursework.
During my schooldays the major danger was nuclear Armageddon(CND),so at least we've moved on.
it's to be hoped this enthusiasm will continue when these youngsters get to voting age,as like they state it's their future on the line.

Re: Climate strike: schoolchildren walk out to protest
1. It is an emergency but you try and get elected by telling us this and acting upon it.
2. Most of the public are not that well informed, certainly not enough to act. People are still buying cars, even diesel cars. They are still flying on holidays. Farmers are still using dangerous pesticides, as I suspect are home owners to deal with aphids say. We still have boy racers, formula one etc etc.. These people don't seem to know about things.
They are quite right to strike and that Swedish girl that inspired it speaks really well. They haven't made this mess - we have and we should sort it out. Yes, other countries must do it too. Even if we do some radical things it perhaps won't make much difference. The costs though will be enormous. Rising sea levels leading to inoperable ports, loss of land etc. For a country that can't feed itself we will be in big trouble.
The causes of climate change are population growth and increased standard of living. On top of that we have generally ignored the warnings. In order to save the planet we need to carefully reduce the population (by lowering fertility rates), and reduce our standard of living, including the rich. This is going to be a political issue about equality amongst other things. I suggest that we in the UK:
1. Stop immigration immediately whether people have good reason or not. We can then just try to feed the numbers we have.
2. Encourage everyone who has a garden, lawn etc. to try and grow food in an environmentally friendly way, encouraging as best we can insects, birds etc..
3. Transport. Petrol and diesel cars should be phased out as quickly as possible (not 2040 but 2020 or so), using taxes to discourage. Some solution to using diesel on farms and transport needs to be found. Discourage flying and phase it out. People and freight movement generally should be discouraged. Local encouraged.
4. I wonder if some sort of energy use per person quota could be used. It's clearly too high currently.
In general, spend a lot more on climate/ nature welfare research as it specifically relates to the UK - gulf stream included.
As I see it we are heading to our doom and, as these children can see, something needs to be done now. I hope they succeed.
The government's response - them missing classes overloading further teachers - is pathetic.

Do they all walk to school
What oversize cars do Mummy and Daddy drive
Will they turn off the heating and put a jumper on and actually move to keep warm.
Will they not charge their devices just for use for tittle tattle
Will they do without these devices mostly made from plastics and dumped after 1 or two years
Are they going to not go on a plane on holiday
No thought not.

Re: Climate strike: schoolchildren walk out to protest
It's half term for most next week anyway, so it probably was a " charity " non uniform day, bring in a book or your playstaion day ...
On Monday week, the parents should confiscate their mobile phones, " in solidarity with the appalling conditions " that miners endure in digging out the precious metals required to make them, buy them 2nd hand clothes & trainers " in support of the low wages paid in the 3rd world factories that produce the majority of them " , advise them that they'll all be walking to school, as parents will now only drive if absolutely necessary to " reduce emissions ", and boycotting buses for the same reason ! No more central heating, in their bedrooms to " preserve the world's natural resources ", and no baths, only a weekly shower. No more make up for teenage daughters, due to the plastics involved and the past experimentation on animals ...
Their holiday to Spain/Disneyworld/Majorca has not been booked, as I'm sure you kids wouldn't want to be responsible for the aeroplane emissions involved. Instead, we'll all be cycling to Blackpool or taking a train to Kendal where we'll be walking for a week, exploring our own Country ...
Let's see how keen young Harry & Hermione are on that, the little baskets !!!!

Blimey. Some people on here really hate kids.
Re: Climate strike: schoolchildren walk out to protest
It's good for the younguns to make their voices heard on something they can understand and feel passionate about, but why not do it during half term next week and get bigger numbers there?
What I object to is the very young (11,12 etc) being taken along by their parents, the same parents who drag them along to every other cause they want to save. Mainly in Brighton and London... so never mind.
On the flip side my lad was wetting himself when he arrived home from school. Three kids went 'on strike' - two were just skiving and the other, a year nine girl, got on the wrong train and ended up in Matlock instead of Manchester. Her parents then went ape with the school.
Obviously our kids don't care as much as southerners...

Good on them, pity more "adults" in this Country don't start to get active and actually do something about some other things like more money and support for our NHS among others services.
I heard today that someone had to wait 8 hours for an ambulance whilst lying on her kitchen floor unable to move her legs and hands, this useless good for nothing excuse for a Government need kicking out... and keeping out.
Fed up with listening to these idiots criticising people like Jeremy Corbin, half of them probably don't even vote either.
Put your party colours to one side and Vote tactically to get them out!

Re: Climate strike: schoolchildren walk out to protest
The best thing these youngsters can do is to get back to school and work hard in their science and technology and geography classes - science, not just so that they can learn about "climate change" but also so they can learn about the things that can be done to reduce carbon emissions - and geography so that they can learn about the rest of the world and start to have some idea of what trade offs are currently required to reduce carbon emissions.
If the kids are really serious about the UK contributing to reducing the world's emissions then they could make a start by supporting fracking, not opposing it. If fracking is successful it will displace coal fired power generation and natural gas imported from other countries to generate power and heat our homes in the UK - and the nat gas we don't import can be used to displace coal burning power generation in other European countries, including Germany that, oddly, has a "green political agenda" but still burns "brown coal" to fire a large part of the country's power generation.
Make an interesting lesson in the schools to really study some of these issues.

Re: Climate strike: schoolchildren walk out to protest
When the " Remain " campaign advised the young to visit their Grandparents and persuade them to vote " Remain ", my open- minded 30 year old son went to see my father ( then 80 ). Dad told him that he personally wouldn't be voting, as " it won't effect me, it's up to your Generation " .. my son pressed him, " But if you had to vote ? " ..Guich wrote:Kids should take more interest in things like this, but they do seem to like to blame everyone else for the world's ills. " My Dad served in the Royal Signals, was killed in the war and left my mother widowed at 36, with two children, aged 9 & 7. She never so much looked at another man, until she died aged 85, in 1992. He joined the T.A. in 1936, and duly enlisted in September 1939, because he wanted to live in a free Country, and not one dominated by German rule ".
My son voted Leave ...

Hi Lancs, come on you are brighter than this (is that how I should respond)?Lancasterclaret wrote:We live in a rainy, windy island surrounded by tidal oceans.

Don't you think if we knew how to extract power from the tides we would be doing that already? It's one of the areas that all the kids learning things at school may be able to help with in future.
However, I understand there are a lot of countries that don't have extensive tidal oceans around their coasts. How will they contribute to cutting GHG emissions?
Wind power, we are giving it a go - but how will we manage for the times when there isn't enough wind to turn all the turbines?
Solar, pv - we also are doing what we can.
An enormous amount of science and technology learning opportunities for all the school kids, don't you think?
There's also efforts going into CCUS: "carbon capture, usage and storage" - because the work done around "carbon capture and storage" alone has learnt that "usage" is also required to have half-a-chance of making it viable at the stage of science we are currently at.

Paul.
Tides - renewable
Wind - renewable
Hydro - renewable
Back it up with some nuclear reactors when its not so windy and we have a 100% renewable, carbon free, self sufficent energy supply.
Need some serious investment and long term planning, but its a damn sight better than fracking or coal/oil/gas powered power stations

Unfortunately for you, it did .... I may have shortened the conversation, for brevity's sake, but that was the gist ..Lancasterclaret wrote:Nice to see claret4me wins this weeks "didn't happen" award
That post falls below your usual standards, Lancs ...

I'll live mate.
The one thing that will get me bloody annoyed on here is people linking the sacrifices made during the war to Brexit, be that remain or leave.
Its 2019, not 1939 and people need to realise that.
EDIT - your fathers service will always (quite rightly!) be remembered. His inability to move on to understand that its a different time, with a different world, with a different England and Germany will die with the generation that thinks like that (ie due to old age, not some sort of cull before the proper weird ones on here chirp up)
Apologies if it was your grandfather rather than father , but the point still stands.

1) tides - how are we going to generate power from the tides?
2) wind - and what do we do when the wind doesn't blow?
3) hydro - how much hydro capacity have we in the UK? how many villages do you want to drown to add additional hydro capacity?
4) Nuclear - how do we turn nuclear "base load" generation into peaking power - without suffering the occasional nuclear disaster?
As I've said above - best thing the youngsters can do is keep learning at school.
Meantime, the USA has made the highest percentage contribution of any country in cutting its carbon emissions - and all done by substituting nat gas from fracking for the much more carbon intensive coal generation they used to depend on. (making this statement w/out any fact checking - let me know if I've got something wrong here).

1939 was pre EU and european countries still helped each other. Not least during the war. Post EU, and without a war, why wouldn't european countries help each other?
I have no side in this debate, que sera sera and all that, it's not within my power to change it, but I think remainers are hanging on the 'we're doomed!' thread just as tightly as the brexiteers are hanging on to the 'we'll be better' thread. The truth, as ever, lies somewhere between.

How is stopping immigration going to impact climate change? Those potential immigrants will still be living on the same planet.Hipper wrote:The causes of climate change are population growth and increased standard of living.

Because if they are”living” over here they will be consuming more than in their own Country.Rileybobs wrote:How is stopping immigration going to impact climate change? Those potential immigrants will still be living on the same planet.

Re: Climate strike: schoolchildren walk out to protest
Nuclear reactors - they are safe when built correctly, maintained correctly and staffed with staff trained correctly
Wind - slack taken up by nuclear, hydro and tidal power
Tidal - expensive and certainly needs some more research, but the tides are renewable and there is loads of power there. I get the arguments against river barriers, but its better for the enviroment long term I think
Hydro - not sure we can dam anymore rivers, but we should maximise it where we can.
If you think fracking is a good idea, then fine, but its an eyesore and I'm far from convinced about its safety, and IT IS NOT A LONG TERM FIX, ITS AN ENVIRONMENTAL CATASTROPHE AND INCREASES CARBON EMISSIONS. Which kinda defeats the whole point.
