And then again....I'm thinking your correct as it was at the time I was working in London 72/73 , coming home every other weekend. I missed the train home to Burnley owing to being the front runner of a marathon featuring me and about 40 Wednesday fans. Had to thumb it home!
Didn't realise I could run so fast.

His best one is the fact that it was Blackburn & Celtic fans who caused all the carnage in the Anglo Scottish Cup game.
I've had a skim through that site in the past - hilarious, he is delusional.
From my immediate memory Boxing Day 77 we lost 3-2 after being 3-0 down? Attendance was 26,000-ish I think, with Rovers having the usual away chunk of the by-then-fenced Longside, and a group at the top of the Beehole/Longside division with a guy in a blue and white quartered sweater at the front of them and there was a lot of activity there. Boxing Day 78 we won 2-1 after being 2-0 up at HT with a slightly smaller 23k-ish crowd . Seem to remember Uwe smacking in the second with a half volley?
Seems a lifetime ago - I guess it is

I definitely remember the home game we lost 3-2 after being 3-0 down and there were some Rovers fans who thought standing on the Bee Hole was a good idea when it most definitely wasn't. My feeling is that they were doing pretty well at the time and we weren't and they did bring a lot as a 26,000 crowd suggests, but they must have thought they could do pretty much as they liked and I remember there being several flare ups on the Bee Hole.

So as others have remembered then, with just a few pockets of Rovers on the Bee Hole, and not the 5,000 of them in there as they like to tell it.Dark Cloud wrote:I definitely remember the home game we lost 3-2 after being 3-0 down and there were some Rovers fans who thought standing on the Bee Hole was a good idea when it most definitely wasn't. In the 2-3 defeat in 1977 they missed a penalty just after half -time that would have made it 4-0 to them. The fight back led by Peter Noble just wasn't enough.

1978 I was meant to meet a Blackburn supporting mate after the match.......aged 16 my dad just left me outside the ground, no mobiles in those days. My friend failed to show so with just a few quid in pocket I set off.....
Within a few yards, smacked in the face, scarf nicked......(yeah, I know, thick for wearing it, but I’ve always been proud to wear the colours!)
Near the hospital, chased by an unfriendly few.......
Bus station, a lad was beaten up just for being in the queue for a bus heading to Burnley.........I loitered nearby, but then the same group approached me, and whilst threatening me, one of them behind me set fire to my coat, flames everywhere! Coat discarded my Burnley shirt was revealed but fortunately the bus had pulled in so I made the dash for it, just as plod turned up.........
Despised that lot ever since for some strange reason!

Re: Blackburn v Burnley 1978 fighting on the fair ground fighting on the streets
Saw my first game at Turf Moor on a wet Tuesday night v. Newcastle. Announced attendance was somewhere in the 9,000s, as I remember. But it was the last home game before the Blackburn away game on the Easter weekend, and all the Longside wanted to sing about was how they were going to beat Rovers away. Paul Fletcher scored the only goal on a cross from the left side, Peter Noble worked his socks off in the midfield, and Alan Stevenson was his usual steady self in goal. Terry Cochrane had already been transferred, I believe, because I don't remember him. But the 9,000 attendance tells you the financial trouble the club was in. People were demanding top-flight football only, and there was nothing Harry Potts could do about it.

There was obviously less concern about players getting tired in 1978 as a day after the Rovers game we played Blackpool at Bloomfield Road and drew 1-1.
In both matches the opposition were reduced to 10 men, Noel Brotherston and Stan McEwan being the players sent off. I think McEwan may have had a trial at Burnley when John Bond was manager.

Pretty sure that was the same in 1982
Without looking it up i think we played away at Wolves the day after being beaten at home by Blackburn.
The modern managers would have a massive hissy fit about that.

I went to a few of the games in the 70s at ewood. One game we had to remove our footwear and place them in the back garden of some small cottages at the side of the Darwen end. I even had my aluminium comb confiscated. I cant recall which year it was though. Spent all the match in stocking feet.

Remember doing the same down at Oxford Utd. Here's a couple of other photos from end of 1977/78 season.
2-1 home win over then league leaders Tottenham. Not sure what Tottenham were doing in Division Two? Fans on pitch after final home game v Luton.

Re: Blackburn v Burnley 1978 fighting on the fair ground fighting on the streets
I actually don't THINK that was Tottenham's only foray into the second division around that time. Rather like Chelsea back then, they were very much also rans among the big boys, who got fairly large crowds based on past glories, but were generally a soft touch, especially on the road. They flirted with relegation on and off and at least once it bit them in the botty and they went down. I remember that game where Noble scored the winner and if I'm right Spurs actually took the lead before we scored 2.
Re: Blackburn v Burnley 1978 fighting on the fair ground fighting on the streets
Went down to Spurs 1977 for a Div 2 game, think we lost 3-0. No segregation back then from what I remember, 2 of us stood on the Shelf ( their end).
Must have been other clarets down there but at the time, we thought we were the only ones !

Hired a double decker bus with some right nutters

Stools a chairs were getting thrown through them smash the pub to peices
It was quick mount back on the bus i thought that be that
It went on to Whalley and it proper kick off out side every one of the four pubs
Poilice arrived in force and was chucking anyone in the back of the vans others were trying to pull them back out it was mad as
When it calmed down and most were back on the bus their was a police escourt back to Burnley
With 17 police vehicles with blue lights going
This just put more excitement on it as nearly every window on the upper deck got kick out
As the bus pull up outside the Thomson center i so the police running over to stop us getting off as they wanted to nick everyone on the bus
I just pushed through the door with all my might and legged it onto the bus station grab hold of a bird in bus que and told her to say we where a couple
Anyway everyone on that bus got took to the station and charged with causing criminal damage and affray
It made the papers and the driver had to say he'd and his bus had been hijack and forced into it mad mad night that

Re: Blackburn v Burnley 1978 fighting on the fair ground fighting on the streets
2 or 3 of us lived locally, & got the bus back to local spots from Whalley. I remember it as Fulham at home, drinking by the Turf then setting offf, par-boiled. Bus was full but we managed to fit loads more on at Accy. Blackburn was a non -event but the frustrations were taken out in Whalley later. Watching lads being rescued/pulled out of police vans and cars was entertaining, and the local bobbies trying to deal with the situation. A couple of good local army boys were there but I couldn’t ever blame them for the Thunderflashes in The De Lacy & Dog. Silly stuff looking back, but different times. RIP Gaz.cold claret wrote:
