Ivy Bank school Fire

Post by Darthlaw » Sun Feb 17, 2019 2:34 pm

Sad sight but the old school is currently going up in flames. Hopefully no one is hurt (they shouldn’t be seen as it’s no longer in use)

The flames can be seen from the top end of Padiham.

I can see it in all it's glory. Gone up like a good 'un.

Lots of "fire tourists" about, blocking the roads ffs.

Plenty of ghouls walking across the Haberham fields for a closer look / to get in the way of the authorities.

I’m watching folk park outside my house to go for a look

Does anybody remember when Towneley High School got set on fire? I was teeing off on what was the 5th hole (I think it's been changed since) on Towneley Golf Course with my Dad as it went up in smoke.

It’s been left rotting for such a long time.

Not the first fire there. There was one in the late 80s that destroyed the Art & DT department. Took them years to rebuild it and offer woodwork & metalwork on the curriculum again. Always found that bizarre for a school in a working class area built on industry & manufacturing.

My old school as well. Great memories from it. I went 83-88. Sad to see it like this and should have been demolished years ago to avoid things like this happening.

I went past the old girls High School on Kiddrow Lane recently, that was in the process of being knocked down while my old school, the Grammar School, has been replaced by some horrible looking building. I think they were building Ivy Bank when I first went to the Grammar School which was in 1963.

I struggle to believe what has been allowed to happen with our schools. The Girls High, in particular, was an excellent building.

The girls high school was an outstanding building.

Criminal that it couldn't be used/restored.

With Ivy Bank gone, that's another part of my youth gone forever. `77 - `79 then moved to Nelson and went to Walton high for the remainder of my... ahem... education.

The oldest but the best building of the three of them. Such a shame to see it derelict and the demolished.

Neither the Grammar / Habergham or Ivy Bank were architectural delights but both deserved better fates. The girl's school had become the 6th form by the time I went and it was definitely the best building of the three and as you say Tony, a real shame.

Sadly a lot of the older schools were closed - and though I can't say this is the case for everyone of them - some where simply moved because of ~EU grants. To get the grant new schools had to be built but existing ones could not use the grant to be improved. Towneley School was one case - a perfectly good building being closed, (later knocked down I think - I live in Sussex now), and the new school built on the old playing fields across the river, which often used to flood.
I also remember Ivy Bank being built when I was at the Grammar School - 1962-69

Anyone know what pleasure people get from looking at a fire. It's not as if they are never orange and hot?

Mine and my mother's old school, and my nephew attended Hambledon in more recent years, never understood the rational of merging Hambergham and Ivy Bank, they hated each other, saw many set-to's during my schooldays in and out of lesson time.

The football rivalry was notable, but i'm sure there was other reasons for the animosity.

Yet more history being lost to developers :(

They used to say at Ivy Bank if by fourth year you're not pregnant you get expelled for letting the school down.

And quite a good bit of excellent and rampant totty!
IVY Bank merged with my old school The Grove a couple of years after I left but many a lunchtime was spent flitting from one girls school to the other.

I’m surprised it stayed up as long as it did. It was falling down when I was at Habergham in the late 80s.
