Re: Grimsby v Burnley3rd round of fa cup1974
Grimsby were a decent outfit at one time and we got a few drubbings there both on and off the field after we fell from grace. But back when we played that cup tie we had an excellent team and we negotiated a potential banana skin very well to set up the Oldham game which is being talked about elsewhere on here just now.
In later years I recall seeing one Johnny Francis making his debut for us and scoring there, before they knocked 4 past us, showing just how far we'd fallen by then!!

Which got bricked as we approached Cleethorpes. We used to have special trains to lots of games in those days.Spike wrote:The club ran a Special train to the game!

He scored his first goals for us there in that 4-2 defeat but it wasn't his debut.Dark Cloud wrote:In later years I recall seeing one Johnny Francis making his debut for us and scoring there, before they knocked 4 past us, showing just how far we'd fallen by then!!

I stand corrected CT. I've always believed it was his debut, but I must have remembered it wrongly.

Didnt we go on to sign Doug Collins after his performance against us ?

We signed Doug Collins after we'd played them in the League Cup in 1968/69. He apparently turned in a superb performance against us in the first match at Grimsby which ended 1-1.paulatky wrote:Didnt we go on to sign Doug Collins after his performance against us ?

Grimsby is one place I always say I'm never going again.
Been 3 times though
Got beat 6-5
Missed out on the playoffs 3-1 when Gazza played
and drew 1-1 in an FA cup match.

Just checked it, was his second game. He'd made a debut against Gillingham at home a week earlier.Dark Cloud wrote:I stand corrected CT. I've always believed it was his debut, but I must have remembered it wrongly.

Why are they not called Cleethorpes Town anyway? Always wondered. Been to Cleethorpes a lot in the past and seen the ground many times (though never been to a game there) but I have never to the best of my knowledge been to Grimsby. All very odd, it's not as though Grimsby is a more glamourous place than Cleethorpes as in 'we'll call the club Grimsby Town 'cos it sounds better'.

Gazza was on the pitch, it's stretching things to suggest he actually played. He wasn't alone in being dire that game, our Greek keeper ran him a close second and I don't think he had been drinking. Though that would explain some of his performance.....Quickenthetempo wrote:Grimsby is one place I always say I'm never going again.

Didn't Gascoigne come on at half time with us 3-0 down? Shambles of a performance but we'd had a lot of those in the second half of the season.Herts Clarets wrote:Gazza was on the pitch, it's stretching things to suggest he actually played. I think that win either saved Grimsby from relegation or at least gave them a chance to survive with just one game left.

Re: Grimsby v Burnley3rd round of fa cup1974
I was there in 74 to witness the fa Cup win and later in December 82, to witness one of the worst goal keeping displays in all my days watching Burnley.
I remember before the game I saw Alan Stevenson wife driving to the ground. Her husband was dreadful that day, he was the reason we got beat 3-2 and went on to get relegated.
Went back a few more times since 82 and one particular day had my car surrounded by a mob of Grimsby, (who were waiting to ambush Claret fans) they had not a clue me and two mates where Burnley, even though my mates did their best by trying to give the show away by both jumping in the back seat together
No colours no trouble

There is a team called Cleethorpes town. They play in the NPL east.houseboy wrote:Why are they not called Cleethorpes Town anyway? Always wondered.
