Laptop, no internet, help requested!
I've got a relatively old laptop (about 6 years, running windows 8.1) that I used to use as a back up for when the internet went down - it always worked fine, but i used it to store mp3's, pdfs, guitarpro files (not that I expect anyone to know what they are!) etc, but intermittently since I moved to a new place it's often lost and found the network. Now it either doesn't find my network, or finds it, asks for the password, and still won't let me connect. All other devices are fine and I've done the usual updating/restarting procedure.
Any ideas?

Can’t help with your net problem but I’d be getting all your files transferred onto a backup hard drive before it packs in altogether.

Oh don't be like that! On the internet it's a fine line between a mac snob and a helpful chap. It's like Audi or BMW drivers vs everyone else. Mac snobs won't help windows users, Audi drivers own the roads. Twas ever thus.

I haven't tried as I'd need both the length of the Titanic and the depth where the Titanic is now to make it reach.ClaretMoffitt wrote:can you get a connection when you hardwire it?
Or take it to a different part of the building. I'll try tomorrow. If it works with a direct connection, then what?

Create a hotspot with your phone and see if you can connect to the hotspot. If you cant then the network card's probably ******.duncandisorderly wrote:I haven't tried as I'd need both the length of the Titanic and the depth where the Titanic is now to make it reach.

Also make sure your router is broadcasting in both 2.4ghz and 5.0 ghz. You said you're quite a distance from the router so it could be that you're trying to connect to 5.0ghz wifi when you need to be connecting to 2.4ghz due to range and obstacles.

Have you tried to Shut it down by holding the power button then fire it up again and whilst loading it should come up with a few options try "safe mode with network". See if it's connected it it has then restart it the correct way.duncandisorderly wrote:I've got a relatively old laptop (about 6 years, running windows 8.1) that I used to use as a back up for when the internet went down - it always worked fine, but i used it to store mp3's, pdfs, guitarpro files (not that I expect anyone to know what they are!) etc, but intermittently since I moved to a new place it's often lost and found the network. The missus has an oldish laptop for work and sometimes the WiFi icon disappears altogether and disconnects so I have to do this.

Neither a Mac owner nor a Audi driver.duncandisorderly wrote:Oh don't be like that! On the internet it's a fine line between a mac snob and a helpful chap. It's like Audi or BMW drivers vs everyone else. Mac snobs won't help windows users, Audi drivers own the roads. Twas ever thus.
I used to be a Locksmith before I retired.
On the Lancashire Blackburnegraph I was asked about how to get into the boot of a 2005 5 series Beemer with a flat battery. (He is a Rovers troll but I thought he was OK at the time and was a bit of a joker)
Jokingly I said an angle grinder works well....
As an aside I told him the name of an auto locksmith near him .... the sad pr!ck went off on one and became very abusive that I wouldn't help him.
I tried to point out I did doors, windows and furniture but not Cars or Safes.... as they are specialised....
Still the sad bugger gave me abuse.....
Ah well I suppose there are people out there with no sense of humour.
Needless to say I am not a computer engineer either ... take a joke man lifes too bloody short

Re: Laptop, no internet, help requested!
Right, having completely ignored all advice given so far, (not through ignorance [well, partly ignorance....I don't understand what the Turtle told me to do!...], just circumstance), tonight it's been different.
I did a restart, tried to connect, put in the network password and, like last time (which I didn't mention), it asked me if I wanted this device to connect with other devices, to which I said no. Lo and behold, it worked! For about half an hour. Then it drops, then I do it again and it works, then it drops etc etc.
New symptom, new fault?

It's a long way away and means drilling through ceilings. Or floors. Depending on your point of view.

- What anti-virus do you use? Try uninstalling it completely (and running a removal tool if you can work out how).
- Check and complete all Windows Updates by connecting the laptop to your router on an ethernet cable rather than wireless
- neither of the above help, uninstall the wireless driver from Device Manager and restart your computer. It should auto-install a basic wireless driver on boot.
Very unlikely it's a faulty component, 99% of repairs are software related. That's where I'd start.

Check the power management on the network card, it is likely that your laptop is turning it off for you

If you don't want to use bluetooth or wifi enabled devices, you may need to drill to hardwire.duncandisorderly wrote:It's a long way away and means drilling through ceilings. Or floors. Depending on your point of view.

Re: Laptop, no internet, help requested!
Try routing your signal using TP Link (or similar) which uses your ring main as a conduit
for the signal current. You can then use it as wifi or hard wire it to the unit in the room.
NB This will only work if the ring main serves both floors/rooms in question.

It's good practice to ensure the date and time are accurate (it can drift).
If they're a long way out it can bugger up things.

I live above a shop, which is closed when I'm in.
It works fine connected directly to the router.
New fault seems to be that it finds my network, connects for 30 seconds, disconnects, won't automatically reconnect. I can manually find the network and connect again then the same thing happens.
This only happens when I'm using spotify. If I'm just using a browser I have no problems.

Re: Laptop, no internet, help requested!
Get a wifi dongle for about £3 and connect it to your laptop via USB and see if that works.
