O/T Tinnitus, Has anyone found a cure that works?

Post by icu81b4 » Wed Feb 20, 2019 9:58 pm

I've had this affliction for years but it's getting louder and more annoying this last week so I'd like to know if anyone has been successful in reaching silence again?

Also I apologise to even mention the name in the title, those of you who suffer will know why!

Those of you that don't ....we don't appreciate being reminded about it as it brings it to the forefront of our mind.

Ticking clock or background music can help IMO if only to distract and take your mind off it I've found.also found it occurs with TV on sometimes emitting a high pitch whistling

No known cure. I've had it for years, my Mum had it. Best advice is to stay away from noisy environments.

No sorry, had it for 7 years after falling down steps ;) . The worst is when I get 3 noises at once.
And yes I’d had a few

Don’t know if it works for everybody but a family friend found tapping behind the ear on the skull helped to calm it - not a cure but gives some peace when it’s really bad.

Mrs Trevor and myself both suffer and both suffer at the same time. We have know idea why but if one of us says the tinnitus is bad today t’other will always say “so’s mine”.
We have noticed we suffer more when cold so even with the radiators on I have no shame in sitting in a woolly hat.

I am a fellow sufferer and for many years have searched for an answer without real success. What I would say is try every suggestion. In my case reducing the effect from catarrh and colds which build up pressure in my ears reduces the tinnitus. Therefore TT's practical suggestion (8) may help. I have take beta-histine tablets which I think thins the fluid in the ear helps. But this is a very complex problem.

No, he cured tinnitus by tapping other people’s skulls.

Another sufferer here although it rarely gets bad enough to cause me too many problems. Having said that, it's been bad for the last 2-3 days although that might be down to me having a really bad cold.

I had a brain tumour in 2009 and when it was removed they removed everything 'ear related' on one side and it of course left me with one sided hearing. Since then I've had tinnitus that is as loud as a washing machine on full spin at all times, if people heard what I hear they'd be shocked to the core. I could stand next to a jet taking off and still hear the noise.

Initially it ruined my life, I was almost suicidal and wouldn't accept I'd have to live with this noise for every second of my life. I researched everything there was including diets (Avoiding anything that raises heart pressure) but ultimately there is absolutely nothing that is successful.

About 8 years ago I just accepted that I had to live with it. I found that worrying and stressing about making it go away simple exacerbated the noise and made anxious. I can honestly say that for years it hasn't bothered me one bit indeed even though the noise is constant and loud I haven't noticed it for months until I read this thread title.

Not helpful but I do find just accepting it, which does take mental strength is the only cure.

I thought I had a tumour. Went deaf in my left ear all of a sudden a couple years ago (age 39) then I started getting a loud whooshing noise in both ears mainly my left that causes pain. Tinnitus is a ******* nightmare. Keeps me awake at night a lot. That buzzing is a pain in the arse. But I've accepted it and even though I know it's there non stop it doesn't bother me as much as it used to. Mentally it is draining though.

Don't stay in a quiet room and if you are then play some light music is my only advice really to anyone who has it. Doesn't stop it but helps a tad.

I have it too, through my own ignorance. Loud music via headphones, and a lot of gigs stood by speakers. I'm usually okay until we watch TV in an evening, when the sound seems to intensify.

To combat it, I listen to a lot of music, at sensible volume. I wish there was a cure, but equally I wish I had listened to advice when a teenager, regards loud music.

It's my bed. I have to lay in it.

Distraction works for me. Breath in through nose and out noisily through mouth and listen to this sound instead. It helped when a specialist explained to me that it was like as if the brain is trying to decode what is actually silence. This helped me realise that worrying about it was a) not necessary and b) unhelpful, as stress can make it worse. I also had a precautionary MRI scan just to rule out anything sinister, which came back fine and again reassured me.

Yes, I have had tinnitus for several years. Not sure if it only applies to me, but it seems to get worse when I'm tired, so obviously more in a evening. As many of you have found out, there is no apparent cure. But I have been wearing hearing aids (in the ear type) for some years now, (the hearing loss being put down to listening to music in my younger days with head phones on and the music too loud!! Yes, sometimes when you are young you just don't listen to what others are telling you.....).

However, I find that wearing the hearing aids 'masks' the hissing sound so much that I don't notice it! Thankfully, when I take them out, the hissing sound doesn't return immediately which means it doesn't affect me going to sleep. I really do feel for anyone struggling at bedtime.

Thanks for the replies, and I can sympathise with you all, I went to bed with pink noise & rainfall from a 'you tube' video on a pair of headphones last night and it seems slightly better today,

It amazes me that there is so little evidence of research in this area given the potential of how many people around the world are willing to pay for a solution.

If I come across something that works, I will post it here.

My Dad has had tinnitus for roughly 15 years. It drove him crazy for a long time but gradually he's learned to live with it and can largely block it out. Sadly I don't think there's a known cure available.

I was referred to a tinnitus specialist and she gave me a "tinnitus masker" which is very similar to a small hearing aid. It emits a different noise into your ears and I think the theory is it trains your brain to not hear the tinnitus. It didn't really work for me - I just felt that I could hear 2 noises but apparently is successful for some people.

I think I have it. Would I just know if I had, or is it a doctors job? When all around is quiet I hear a high pitched noise, but when the silence is interrupted the high pitched noise goes away. Is that tinnitus? I only tend to notice it when I'm trying to sleep.

I'm afraid so, it sounds like it (no pun intended) although you seem to have a mild version of it, it varies immensely.

The only time my tinnitus stops is when I've had too much to drink. Obviously it's not a good idea to be permanently drunk, but it does make you wonder if they could develop a cure if alcohol can stop it.

Unfortunately, although the drinking stops it temporarily, the tinnitus comes back louder than ever for the following day as the alcohol wears off.

Ha ha, at last a medicine I like to take.

I'll try it this evening.

Me too ....caused by too many Ramones concerts. It definitely gets worse if I allow wax to build up - so a weekly dose of olive oil in the ear helps keep that under control but the hissing is always there.

Have you been tested for Meniere's disease? Sudden deafness, tinnitus and vertigo are typical symptoms.

Got it 18 months ago in a bike accident. Have accepted that I will likely have to live with it the rest of my life. Doesn't bother me unless I start thinking about it.

Had it for about 10 years now. Began one day when a went for a ****. Awful at first. Couldn’t stop thinking aboit it. Now it’s reyt. Don’t even know I have it most of the time. Can get pains behind the ear and sometimes terrible pain when I’m landing/taking off on a plane. Also terrible after a night out.

I have Tinnitus as well, but after having a nightmare time adjusting, I can now say it generally doesn’t bother me.
To the original poster you are probably going through a spike where the sound appears louder but it will drop to your usual baseline level.
The brain is fantastic at adapting and as I don’t notice it for 99% of the day I think to myself it’s gone back to silence. Of course if I listen for it or now as I type this my ears are whistling away. My biggest tip to anyone who is suffering is to train your brain to distract your mind from it.

since opening this thread and reading other peoples problems with it - mine's started. I am usually lucky in that I can ignore it to a large extent - its only when you think about it too much does it become distracting, well for me it is. I tend to avoid silence as far as possible, I even have a woman in my life to ensure that I don't get a minute of it ;) At night, I have bluetooth wireless headphones and have Radio 4 Xtra shows to listen to on a low volume via my phone and the BBC Radio app - been life changing doing that, I am usually asleep within 10 minutes instead of hours listening to the whine... (tinnitus - not the good lady this time)

Yes it has dropped back to usual level now, as I mentioned above I think the headphones with pink noise helped reset it.

It seems bizarre that no-one appears to have an explanation as to what causes it, a bit like the yips at putting (which I also have) perhaps they are related

Mine seems to be worse when I'm dehydrated. I tried some of the "cures" on youtube but they are just a distraction and have no lasting effect.

I was very surprised when I spoke to my dad because he said his had gone. But then again so has his hearing. He's deaf as a post these days.

I think avoiding silence and trying to not think about it are going to be the only ways to manage it.

Thanks for the link, when I said "what causes it" I meant what creates the noise that you constantly hear, as opposed to what caused it in the first place.

Playing in a rock band doesn't help, although nowadays our on-stage volume is relatively low, the loud bit is in front of the PA..

Try holding both approx half a shot glass of lime juice and a reasonably large slug of Baileys in your mouth. Mix them around for a while and see how you get on.
