Ashley Shameful
I read the other day that Newcastle owner Ashley sold land adjacent to St James Park (to a developer).....the only place where the ground can be expanded.
£9m.
He purchased the land from the club, some years ago....Well he could, as chief shareholder.
That is a rank action for personal gain, without any thought for the club.
What a w anker.

Re: Ashley Shameful
I'd be very interested to see where this land is to be honest. They've got two massive stands but behind the smaller stands are a road (behind the goal) and listed buildings (on the side). Not sure how that ground can be expanded.

Fake or not, I'm curious. I can't see how they can expand it and I can't imagine where he might have sold land.Spike wrote:Fake news then CT? typical dreaming Geordies

Re: Ashley Shameful
Barrack Road on one side, Strawberry Place and St James metro station with car park on another, Leazes Terrace with the buildings Tony mentions on the 3rd side, although not sure of their listed status (it's a fairly grand sandstone terrace) - Tony may well be right. That only leaves Leazes Park behind the away end - I don't think it's privately owned (freemen of Newcastle can graze their cattle on it etc I think) and you wouldn't want that stand expanded any more than it is right now. Imagine having to walk up past level 7, level 8, level 9....

Report from their local media.
He's been trying to do something with the land for a few years by the looks of it, fair play to him.

I think those buildings used to be owned by the council but I'm sure I read they are health authority buildings now. I might be wrong on them being listed but this row is what I was referring to.

Just googled it, Leazes Terrace is a Grade 1 Listed Building, built in 1830.

Yes and the photo will have been taken in the shadow of the stand which is directly to the left.ClaretTony wrote:I think those buildings used to be owned by the council but I'm sure I read they are health authority buildings now. OK, so it''s land around Strawberry Place, i.e. the Gallowgate End. There's really not much space to play with there in terms of expanding the ground.

Leazes Terrace was University accommodation, hall of residence a few years ago. Chelsea supporters entered and climbed onto the roof to view the match but still couldn't see!
Re: Ashley Shameful
Anyone else interested to see what happens if Ashley does sell.
I get the feeling there would be a buzz about the place, until they start complaining that they want more/better/bigger name players, begin slagging the team off, then the manager and back to the owners. I wouldn't be at all surprised if they would find themselves in serious trouble - but it would still be Ashley's fault for leaving when he does haha

They'd be like Villa fans, they'd soon return to their default setting after the initial buzz.JTClaret wrote:Anyone else interested to see what happens if Ashley does sell.

When I first saw Burnley there you could see Leazes Terrace from inside the ground. There was no stand on that side until around 1974.CleggHall wrote:Leazes Terrace was University accommodation, hall of residence a few years ago. Your right. I stood there with my dad & his mate around 1970/71. We won 1-0.
You could see over. Only half the ground had roofing back then.
I went again in the early 80s, travelled up from London with some friends and they'd built a stand.

The ground was a right tip to be honest. This is the best pic I can find from back then showing the open side.Buxtonclaret wrote:Your right. I stood there with my dad & his mate around 1970/71. We won 1-0.

Re: Ashley Shameful
St James Park is a fantastic stadium. Sir John Hall or whoever designed it must have eeked out the maximum number of seats possible on the plot that was available.
As Tony said those listed buildings totally impeded a symmetrical layout.
Going back in history the old West Stand was one of my favourites (from old tv pictures and photos). Not sure how to post pics on here but it’s one of those where the enclosure goes right down to the pitch with massive concrete rails to lean on to. Brooding over the whole pitch.

Re: Ashley Shameful
Sat in the then Sir John Hall stand in the 1990s at a Newcastle v Blackburn FA Cup tie, 1-1 draw. Newcastle equaliser at the Gallowgate end was so far away that no-one knew who had scored other than it was not Andy Cole or Ruel Fox! Turned out Rob Lee got it.

Re: Ashley Shameful
Well there’s a thing.
Where actually did you read this Ian ? Source as they say. I believe the Beano is long discontinued.
The stadium can’t be expanded but he sold the land anyway. Developers tend to keep land they can develop and sell land they can’t. Usually to others who see personal gain in developing it for some other use. Also just because he’s the major shareholder in the stadium that doesn’t mean he can force another landowner to sell land to him.
File this under misdirected socialist nonsense.

File Mike Ashley under “Fair game for slagging off” for anything he does. The truth is that the Geordies are Sweaties in microcosm. Spend all your money on us.
