I think they were just a bunch of lads enjoying mucking about and getting paid for it and they didn't seem to take themselves too seriously, yet in the end they let the music do the talking and much of it has stood the test of time. Great childhood memories as mentioned.

Re: RIP Peter Tork
Aw, sad news.
Met him when he did an impromptu gig at The Sun Inn about 11-12 years ago (no, honestly)
Bit quiet but happily signed autographs and posed for photos.

Getting home from the match just in time to see The Monkees on TV on a Saturday. As mentioned, they made some great tunes none better than Pleasant Valley Sunday, a little sideways swipe at middle America of the 60's.

Absolutely loved the Monkees, stepping stone remains one of the few songs that can get me up on karaoke.
Thank you Peter for many many happy hours. RIP

Re: RIP Peter Tork
They took Neil Diamonds songs and gave them a good twist up and rocked...
Loved the Monkees TV show when I was a kid (had a model of the Car )
Saw Mickey Dolenz on Broadway in New York in 2003 in Aida (not the Verdi opera but the Tim Rice/Elton John collaberation) he was the Pharaoh....
Sad to here of Peter Torks passing RIP

Re: RIP Peter Tork
My mate (who wrote a book about The Monkees) will be distraught tonight. Not exactly ecstatic myself.
Saw them a few years (7ish?) ago on their last UK tour when Davy Jones was still with us. Fantastic even for a made-up band!
RIP Mr Tork....you'll be much missed like your band mate, Davy

As above, used to love their TV show. Part of my formative years - could have done a lot worse.
RIP Peter and thanks for the entertainment.

RIP Peter.
Coincidentally his name came up on the Glen Campbell docu, on BBC4 last week. Micky Dolenz told the story of him turning up with his bass to play on some of the songs but the Wrecking Crew, for those who don't know LA superstar session musicians, had it all in hand and he was politely told he wouldn't be needed. He did end up a fine bass player.

Re: RIP Peter Tork
That really is sad. He was quite a musician.
The Monkees were my group. I have all their UK records in the loft. I used to record the songs on my tape recorder. Everyone had to be quiet. However, my Scottish grandad, who was a bit deaf, used to come to tea on Saturday. I had lots of recordings, suddenly interrupted by a very loud Scottish voice asking for something. Others were interrupted by the kitchen door opening, followed by my mum saying something like, "More tea anyone?" Or "teas ready, shall I bring it in?" Etc.
Young Ian, not vest pleased!
For Peter, I remember Peter Percival's pet pig named Porky!
Thank you and Davy plus Micky and Mike for my teenage awakening.

Re: RIP Peter Tork
We must be of era because I loved the Monkees as well.
A sad loss.
Just for the trivia buffs, Mickey Dolenz played Circus Boy as a child, for those old enough to remember, and Mike Nesmiths mum invented Tipex, liquid paper.

I have a friend who lives near a street called Pleasant Valley.
Probably my favourite Monkees song.

Yes that one was not on any of the LPs. I got my 'very much played' copy of the 45 from a girl at school.hampsteadclaret wrote:Thanks for the great pop music..

Re: RIP Peter Tork
I too loved (and still do) The Monkees
often watch you tube and play their songs
Peters voice on this track (only shades of grey) is great and he was always comical!
great group and like many on here played a big part in my 'growing-up' years!

Re: RIP Peter Tork
Can we have a separate part of the forum for recently-deceased American musicians? What's this got to do with Burnley FC? This is a football forum. There's no place on here for anything other than football. Football, football, football.
etc...
etc...
