We were fantastic that night and deserved far better than we got. Even Nathan Peel played well, think it might have been his first start for us.

Yep, was there for that one. We really did play well that night and tbh we should have won the first leg with Johnny Francis constantly skinning and embarrassing some much lauded, apparently up and coming England star called Campbell!!

Great stuff. Does the site still have the report from the Derby match? Would love to read it again.

I'd completely forgotten about this game.. but your'e right. I was mates with a lad who was a Spurs fan then and remember now laughing about how much he rated Campbell. He looked useless then. In the Twitter age, he'd be ridiculed and there'd be demands he's sent out on loan to Milton Keynes.

Five years later and he's one of the best centre halves in the world.

Excellent piece. Remember it well. If I remember rightly, it was in this night that the magnificent photo was taken of the girl looking up on the Longside.

The home leg saw Spurs break as fast as I've ever seen a team and the move was brilliant. Might of been the one Teddy hit the post with.

Remember it well , me and my brother drove down.
It was terrible weather it would have been off had the legs been the other way round.
When we eventually got into the stadium you felt like you had just jumped into a swimming pool.
Its was one hell off a game of footballl and we deserved more than we got had we had their skill up top we would have at least repeated that 1-4
score line 10 years prior.
I will never forget the drive back it was pelting it down and very hazardous as we got near Bury the car we were in aqua plained across the 56 and it seemed to correct it self before going through the central reservation
Even though we got soundly beat my spirits were high after what i had witnessed at the Lane.

I was at the game and it was the first time I'd seen Francis outpaced by anyone. Campbell was immense for his age and could really shift.

We really pushed Spurs that night, and the season ultimately ended in glory at Wembley.

Don't forget this was at a time all clubs took the League Cup seriously, and played their superstars.

I am pleased to say I was at both Derby, which has to remain number one and the Spurs match. I remember a steward staring up and shouted, "Don't you lot ever go home?" Our chanting just continued.

I was right behind the goal at WHL which put Spurs 2-1 up and saw it was going in as soon as he hit it. It was actually a great strike, but rank awful defending to let him ghost so easily into that position. And as mentioned, by then they only had 10 men which made it even more of a sickener.

I was at WHL but sat in the home end. When we scored I went crazy forgetting we’re I was sat. Nobody else moved. Then two rows in front and about 10 seats along there was another couple going crazy too. Didn’t Les Thompson get hit by a Spurs player in the first half? I’m sure in an interview afterwards he confessed “he just had the type of face you wanted to hit!”

Yes, Darren Caskey who was sent off for it.
It was uncanny that season the number of opposition players sent off for incidents involving Les Thompson
Paul Masefield (Preston at home in League Cup)
Darren Caskey (Spurs away in League Cup)
Chris Beaumont (Stockport in play-off)
+ a lot more. Not sure if one of the 2 Rochdale players sent off in the FA Cup was for a bad challenge on Thompson.
