Re: Game in Denver
Yes, 12:30 in Burnley, but 5:30 a.m. in Denver. Full credit to Bulldog that they will open for the Premier League early kickoffs. And, I'm still living, in part, on UK time, so not too much of a hardship that I will be watching the game.
And I'll be skiing in Sunday.
3 points will be the highlight of my w/end.

Re: Game in Denver
Looks like 3 inches of snow overnight in Denver. Getting my snow boots on for short walk to British Bulldog. I think it's the earliest I've ever gone out to a pub.
Enjoy the game, all -especially all Clarets in North America.
Do we have any Clarets watching also in South America?

Re: Game in Denver
I remember watching the Tyson Holyfield earbite fight in Denver. It was in the baseball bar near the stadium. Only stayed for a couple of nights but loved it. Would love to go back.

Mano a mano. Would have loved to see the look on the Spurs fan face at the end of the game.

If you had let me know sooner, I could have joined you. Only about a three days drive from here. Would have been well worth it.

No. A ManU came in for last 15 mins. He congratulated Clarets on win.
So 4 in total at the end of the game, including barman.

I think most ManU fans have a soft spot for us, although they would loathe to admit it. At least as a third party between a Claret and a member of the Yid Army, there would only be one place to put their sentiments with. If he had a black and white striped shirt, like NHL referees wear, he could have arbitrated a best 2 out of 3 grudge match.

Re: Game in Denver
Hi ontario, I watched my first NHL game on Monday night, Colorado Avalanche v Florida Panthers. Each team had 1 goalie and 5 "outfield" (should that be "out ice rink"?) players - who, as I'm sure you know more than I do, rotated on and off the field at regular intervals. There were 4 referees on the rink at all times - that works out as a ref for every 3 players.ontario claret wrote:I think most ManU fans have a soft spot for us, although they would loathe to admit it. I chose to support the Avalanche - the home team and they played in (an approximation of) claret and blue.
3 sessions of 20 minutes, so 60 mins of action. Lots of time outs and other "stop the clock" situations. Maybe that would give us a full "90 minutes" football game - and cut out any time wasting.
One player was sin-binned, so his team down to 4 outfield players. Then, and I was puzzled by what was going on, the Panthers swapped out the goalies for an extra outfield player and went full on attack. This ended when the Avalanche cleared the puck all the way upfield and into the Panthers net. But, this was "No goal" just the end of whatever this other penalty period was for. I needed that explaining by a local fan.
The game was taken to "over time." Teams now reduced to 3 outfield players. Panthers scored after Avalanche had again been all out attack - and their golden goal had them as the winners.
I liked the physical nature of the game - reminded me of "all-in, anything goes" basketball or similar way back in my school days. Tactics, however, seemed to be pretty simple - and repetitive - puck hit hard up to the far end and behind the oppostion goal. It was "transfer deadline day" (or whatever it's called in NHL) and one of the Avalanche players had been transfer perhaps only a little before the teams were announced - from the Panthers. He scored his debut goal from one of the pass backs from behind his former team mates' goal. (None of the "Dyche fit" challenges for him to prove before he got a start)!

Re: Game in Denver
Hey, Paul Waine. For an obvious newby to the game, I think you did pretty well. Those "4 referees" were actually 2 referees and 2 linesmen, who, instead of running up and down the touchline, basically skate from their blueline to the centre red line and back. In hockey, offside is when you proceed over the other team's blueline before the puck. There's also a call called "icing", when you shoot the puck past the other team's goalline from your own end of the ice. And the disallowed goal was because of a delayed penalty. One of the referees would have had his arm up, signalling a delayed penalty. As soon as the other team touches the puck, (ie. the team with the "advantage" loses control), the actual penalty is called and the offending player goes to sit in the box for 2, 5, or 10 minutes, or gets the "red card" (no red cards in hockey), and gets ejected from the game for an attempt to intentionally injure an opponent, like spearing, slew footing, or attempt to decapitate (I made that last one up). Panthers are a joke of a franchise, and haven't made the playoffs for eons. Avalanche aren't much better right now, and finished last overall last year. Curious as to how many people were there. My guess was that it was half full. But Colorado is a legitimate hockey market, unlike the Miami area, although Tampa Bay does quite well in the other part of Florida. Come to Toronto sometime and I'll take you to a local game and try to show you some of the finer points of the game.
