Altrincham Score 6 Away
A very old and famous club are apparently on the up again. I, for one, am very happy to see it. To me, they'll always beat Salford City when it comes to Manchester area non-league clubs.

That league looked stitched on for Chorley, not long back, but they’ve gone into meltdown.Aclaret wrote:We had better look over our shoulder as our local foes, Stockport County are going well, 2nd in the whatever league its called.
Graham Alexander could be gone soon at Salford.

Going back a good while, they used to be called the 'Manchester United' of non league footy.
Think they used to get pretty big gates, for their level they played at.

Famous for FA Cup exploits back in the '60s and '70s. Same as Blyth Spartans (who a distant relative of mine, Shaun Vipond, once played for for a short period of time).

Remember watching them play Everton in a cup replay at Old Trafford in the 70s.ontario claret wrote:Famous for FA Cup exploits back in the '60s and '70s. Same as Blyth Spartans (who a distant relative of mine, Shaun Vipond, once played for for a short period of time).

I remember watching us murder them in the FA Cup in 1981/82 - but there was a time when they were probably the best non-league team in the country. Had there been automatic promotion then they would have got into the league.Buxtonclaret wrote:Remember watching them play Everton in a cup replay at Old Trafford in the 70s.

Thought they'd cracked it when they beat Leyton Orient and Wrexham in the first week of 2019, but they've had a terrible run since. Still in the play-off positions, just, but now nine points behind Wrexham.Tricky Trevor wrote:Graham Alexander could be gone soon at Salford.

Re: Altrincham Score 6 Away
chorleyhere, all people named Vipond are related in some form, since we're all related to two brothers, Robert and Guillaume, who came ashore and participated in the Battle of Hastings in 1066. In fact, there is a story that a certain Norman noble named de Malet, who later to claim the body of King Harald after the battle, was rescued by Guillaume de Vipont (ancient spelling) after he became surrounded by the Saxon housecarls. I've played rugby with a chap named Malet for several years, and I always remind him that he owes me a beer. Actually several. My family came to Canada from near Alston-on-Moor, in 1824, but there are two things that I'm most proud of, and that's Brougham Castle in Penrith, and Hexham Abbey, both built by ancestors in my family. It's wonderful the stuff you can find on-line these days.

Found this.ClaretTony wrote:I remember watching us murder them in the FA Cup in 1981/82 - but there was a time when they were probably the best non-league team in the country. Had there been automatic promotion then they would have got into the league.
Remember them putting my local side out in a replay. They reckoned there were 3000 plus on for the replay.
But looking through these, Alty reached the 3rd round proper three times in the 70's!
Reaching the 1st & 2nd round too in the decade, they probably played more FA cup games than some 3rd & 4 the division clubs!

Re: Altrincham Score 6 Away
I've been trying to find a record of what their manager Tony Sanders had said when the draw was made and it was Burnley or Bury vs Altrincham. It was something like "teams like Burnley and Bury just get in our way" ....and of course he meant that they wanted a big-name glamour tie and teams from the lower divisions wouldn't give Alty the same publicity level. Unfortunately it sounded rather insulting and although he did try and explain what he meant afterwards it certainly wound our fans up. "Sanders Sanders what's the score?" was the song on the Long Side that night. We were just getting into our stride at the time with a long unbeaten run which took us from the edge of the relegation to division 4 to be division 3 champions. That was a really good team - I would say "Happy Days" but the memory of the following 5 years is too horrible.ClaretTony wrote:I remember watching us murder them in the FA Cup in 1981/82 - but there was a time when they were probably the best non-league team in the country. Re: Altrincham Score 6 Away
Alty were well noted for upsetting league clubs. I couldn't remember their manager's name but he did dismiss us before the game as if we were a nothing team. We absolutely murdered them and he did admit after the game that we'd probably get promoted, this despite us still being in the bottom half of the table. We went on to win the league.keith1879 wrote:I've been trying to find a record of what their manager Tony Sanders had said when the draw was made and it was Burnley or Bury vs Altrincham. Re: Altrincham Score 6 Away
Altrincham reached the 2nd round of the FA Cup in 1980/81 and were drawn against Scunthorpe. it ended in a draw and by the time they played the replay both teams knew they had a lucrative trip to Liverpool in the 3rd round.
The replay was all square until the last minute of extra time when the Alty captain (can't remember his name but could be John King, he was a right gobshite) said something to Scunthorpe goalkeeper Joe Neenan who had hold of the ball. Neenan kneed the Alty captain in the b0ll0cks, the ref gave a pen and Alty went through.

Have been to Moss Lane many times including 2 Burnley friendlies in the Howe era. Always a decent trip, good non league ground and now have a large community hall with a bar and tv screens. Went this season when they beat southport, awful game!
My mate played in goal for them for years, was their Gk coach, coach driver and still is their kit supplier. They were in the news recently for playing in a LGBT kit.

CT I went to Anfield for that 3rd round game, as an 8 year old. It was 4-0 or 4-1 to Liverpool I recall.

Watch Altrincham fairly regularly. Season has been very up and down. They won't finish top 3, that will be Stockport, Spennymoor, Chorley. Struggled with injuries and suspensions this year.
Really enjoy home games. Great bar, San Miguel on draft and you can watch the game with your pint in hand. Should make play-off, when it's as we know anyone's !
