Is That The Best PL Performance We've Ever Put In?

Post by ElectroClaret » Sat Feb 23, 2019 11:47 pm

Yes, there was the win over United with the Robbie volley.
And the win at Chelsea.

But given the quality of the opposition, I think that just about shades it. I thought we were excellent all over the field. Opinions?

Perhaps. The win against United in our first PL season was a bit like a cup game so we understandably played out of our skins.

Chelsea last season was special and being 3-0 up at half time will take some beating. But we got run ragged in the second half despite having a player, and then 2 players more. We were clinging on by the skin of our teeth at the end.

Today was probably the most complete performance in that we always seemed in control of the game and even when Spurs equalised and an onslaught seemed inevitable, we picked ourselves up and actively went looking for the winner. There was no hanging on today, the better team won.

Edit - the 2-0 win against Liverpool is up there though, although I’m not sure that side was quite at the level of today’s opponents.

Certainly can't recall the players receiving such high ratings.

Seven seems the base and many with 8's and 9's and
even the occasional 10!

So certainly up there, if not the best.

Yes - it was about a perfect performance as we can expect against one of the bigger teams.

Everton and Bournemouth away last season were brilliant performances as well.

Granted, the opposition aren’t as strong as this Spurs side, but the football we played was terrific.

I’m not sure it was the best. Having said that it was a very good Spurs team. All the players played well which is pleasing, we were very organised and defended very well as a team.

Got to be up there. Kane and Son are top drawer who always give us problems. Lloris is a world cup winning keeper. Vertonghen and Alderweireld are two of the best in the world, an incredible pairing. Erikssen as annoying as he is is equally good in his position.

I do feel they missed Dele Alli who is always dangerous against us. But when they are bringing on players like Lamela and Lucas you know theyre some team.

It has to be up there. The energy. The aggression. The desire. Everything about it was great.

If you were to pick a top 5 definitely in it. But I still love the ruthlessness we dispatched West Ham last year and the unexpected style in which we opened up Chelsea which really started everything off for last season. Liverpool was great but more like the United smash and Grab where we surprised them and rode our luck.

My top five would be (in date order)

Man U
Liverpool
Chelsea
West Ham
Spurs

Even the win v City cant make my top five after yesterday
Now we just need to get one over Arsenal.

It's the sort of performance we've come to actually expect as the norm over a number of years now and the sort of performance which we couldn't produce for some reason between August and Christmas. We're back to doing what we do and if we can keep it up for another few weeks all will be fine!

It’s up ther with the Liverpool win a couple of Seasons ago. We didnt rely on luck or good fortune, it was sheercraft and endeavour on our part that got us a famous win. It might just pip the Liverpool one in my eyes because we took the lead twice.

I think it definitely beats the Chelsea performance, because at Chelsea we'd completely collapsed and were hanging on for dear life against 9 men.
Likewise against United, but at least hanging on for the 1-0 win was our strategy.

That win yesterday beats them both because we outplayed Spurs rather than just out-defended them.

btw, I'd put the 2-0 v Liverpool above the Chelsea and United wins.

Our last game in 2009-10 season against Spurs. 0-2 down to the fourth team in the league and already relegated to win 4-2 was pretty good performance

It was but Spurs quite literally downed tools at half time when they saw the Arsenal score. They had nothing to play for and they allowed us the ball. Big plates started walking around and the game slowed.

Dead rubber though, they where on the beach, and we'd no pressure, yesterday was a massive game at both ends of the table, and we took the challenge on,the really impressive thing was our attitude to their equaliser,we could have gone into our shells and settled for a point, but credit to Sean he made positive changes and reaped the rewards.

Very hard to pick, thankfully there are a few to choose from, but this must be up there. Against Chelsea we ended up holding on against 10 men, despite the terrific performance. Against Liverpool we defended brilliantly, but apart from the 2 goals offered nothing. This might pip those 2 because we created a few other chances that could have gone in, took the game to them at every opportunity, and never looked like conceding, even when we eventually did. To keep the focus and go again, shows what a long way we've come, not just over the last 4 years, but since Boxing Day.

Since the ManU victory we have now beaten 5 of the big 6. Let’s get the Arsenal monkey off our backs in May, they have robbed us so often.
