I visit lots of places and when I do I make damm sure I use the facilities provided. I also do not leave any amount of litter, empty cans, dog crap, etc all over the placearise_sir_charge wrote:I’m interested to know where CaptainKitk goes for day trips.
I assume from his moaning that he doesn’t go anywhere that may in anyway inconvenience anybody that may live local to the place he’s visiting.
How does he get from Barley to the Turf?
I assume he doesn’t take flights from any of the major airports either bearing in mind the issues they have caused for locals.

It is busy all the time and is getting worse, regardless of the weather.
You are right though about the two pubs and the Cabin doing well out of it, although that is of no use to anyone else.

Captain, you'll be pleased to know I'm never going to Barley again. It was nothing like the tropical paradise countless holiday brochures had led me to believe.

I'm in full agreement with the OP.Pendle hill is part of our local Heritage and a cracking place to go but if it's getting out of control something has to be done.... You can't just stroll up to Stonehenge anymore or see it from the main road...it's now a commercial cash cow and Pendle hill could follow if it's not respected or numbers monitored.

Just because he lives there doesn’t mean that he owns it. People should park considerately but they can visit where they like. If you don’t like it then move away to a quieter spot! This is akin to people thinking that they own the street outside their house!hampsteadclaret wrote:Out of order that comment I think.
I know Captain Kirk, though not very well. and he is a decent chap.
His OP is polite and if you live in a place that gets loads of visitors on nice days, it will be frustrating to get the sort of situation that he describes.
Re: Barley is FULL!
A day out in Stoneyholme, are you serious? What did that entail, a hike up March Steet and along Oswald Street to the Gas works? A picnic next to the Swift on the coal tips? A safari in Dead Man’s Valley? Do me a favour.CaptainKirk wrote:Thank you Hampstead (whoever you may be?!).
The point I was trying to get across was the problems caused by the sheer numbers of visitors.
When I was a lad we mainly had Thompson Park or Stoneyholme for our days out. We did venture up Pendle a few times, after having walked from Burnley.
I don’t know what the answer is as this is only February and it wasn’t even a fell race day.

I blame who ever built that ruddy great hill next to the village. It’s grossly unfair on those that lived in the village before the hill was built and couldn’t have envisioned that their homes would be next to a big tourist attraction.

Must admit Barley is silly busy these days but that's testament to the beautiful countryside we have , it's only the same as the lakes and if it brings extra money to the area that's only a good thing for the future of pendle

Same here and I think we have had this conversation before. Pendleton Bottoms at the foot of Greenhead Lane. Jack Moore’s monkey etc.tim_noone wrote:My happiest days spent in stoneyholme as a child at all the places you mentioned. And from there we walked to Pendle bottoms ...remember?

Though the thread is v funny, the serious point being made is that nice places only stay nice if people who visit them don't take the ****.

The Lakes are the same these days.
Walking the dog around the Ogden reservoirs in Barley on a Tuesday afternoon with no one about, well, it doesn't get any better than that.

The only thing that shocks me about this thread is no-one has come out with that immortal phrase ‘bloody townies’. If people don’t want to put up with others visiting a beautiful place don’t spend huge amounts of your hard earned buying a house there. If you have lived there all your life you are lucky, if you are fortunate enough to be able to afford to move there the real locals probably hate you more than tourists because of pushing up the cost of housing.
I did like the ‘barley wine’ post though, real funny.

The ‘Artist’ who came up with the Barley Sculpture Trail posted on Facebook a picture of a tree in the woods covered in bags of dog **** to highlight the littering that goes on in Barley. Ironically, it is the best thing up there and pretty much sums the trail up.

My pet hate is those dog owners that dutifully collect their pooches poo in a nice plastic bag and then just leave it either on the floor or hanging from a tree branch.

The problem is not with "bloody townies" as you call them, it is the sheer number of visitors and the % of them that either do not know how or where to park or just don't care.
As to your second point: lived in Burnley half my life and the rest in Roughlee and Barley and my wife born and raised in Barley and believe me - not a day goes by without us realising we are lucky to live where we do.

Re: Barley is FULL!
Good on ya. Glad you’re a local. Nothing worse than people moving into an area then moaning. The problem with ‘visitors’ is how do you control them. Everyone has a right to visit a place (try Haworth on a good day) so if you get busy days yes it’s a problem. Haven’t been there for ages (Barley) but it is lovely.CaptainKirk wrote:Another one for the thick list.

I do hope though that they don’t try to ‘solve’ it by building more car parks. That would spoil the place.
By the way I’m not ‘thick’ (ha ha) I’m just a bit facetious sometimes. No offence meant bud.

People visiting should park considerately, clean up after themselves and leave the place as they found it. That applies to anywhere, not just Barley. I understand your frustrations in relation to that but to throw a tantrum on a message board and tell people to stay away is just a tad ridiculous.
