Barley is FULL!

Post by CaptainKirk » Sun Feb 24, 2019 4:25 pm

Anyone thinking of visiting Barley, in the shadow of Pendle Hill anytime soon - please don’t.
Not trying to act like a Nimby at all but the situation is becoming ridiculous.
The village already has a large car park for it’s size but this is quickly filled followed by any and every possible spot throughout the village and on all the roads leading out.
The situation is made worse by the complete lack of common sense or consideration shown by people dumping vehicles wherever they wish:
Double parking;
Parking across entrances;
Parking on blind bends;
Parking on grass verges and even flower beds;
Etc
I know today has been a nice day but the problem has been getting worse for a while, caused in part by the ridiculous eyesore known as the “Sculpture Trail”.
The Rescue Services are on record as there being no way they could get through if they had to.

Is someone is parked like an ass across your drive get a landrover and a rope then drag them down the road for a bit. As far as Roughlee should do it !

Likewise. I’ve never been. Think I’ll get the missus to come in a separate car so that I can bring the picnic hamper in mine.

You need to speak to the committee of People In Simonstone/Sabden For Living Amidst Pendle’s Shadow; their action group will have some good ideas.

Mr B,
You make a good point (and one I have made myself when locals say “keep out of our village” as if they owned the place).
However, it is now getting completely out of hand, made worse by the behaviour of a good proportion of the visitors.

Happy to welcome all visitors to Higham village.

Park sensibly and enjoy a pleasant walk to Pendle Hill.

Royboy,
Would be a good idea but we probably had 1,000 cars trying to park today, parking sensibly goes right out the window. Not sure how Higham could cope (I thought you weren’t even allowed to drive through there unless you lived there, to stop Bypass speedsters?)
It is a real problem which has been getting worse for for a while.

Went to the Cabin for lunch today (superb broth and dumplings), it was mental, 1/4 of an hour to get off the car park, cars parked almost to the Roughlee crossroads. Even worse than when they have the foot race up Pendle! Keep away people.

“I know today has been a nice day but the problem has been getting worse for a while, caused in part by the ridiculous eyesore known as the “Sculpture Trail”.”

Surely anything that gets families and specifically kids out of the house for a day is a good thing?

I agree it gets v busy but we are so lucky to have it on our doorstep, more people should take advantage of it IMO.

It's par for the course now if you live any where popular. I've heard similar tales about match days/nights from friends who live near the ground.

Out of order that comment I think.

I know Captain Kirk, though not very well. and he is a decent chap.

His OP is polite and if you live in a place that gets loads of visitors on nice days, it will be frustrating to get the sort of situation that he describes.

But living like common people is good...

She came from Greece she had a thirst for knowledge,
She studied sculpture at Saint Martin's College,
That's where I,
Caught her eye.
She told me that her Dad was loaded,
I said "In that case I'll have a rum and coca-cola."
She said "Fine."
And in thirty seconds time she said,
I want to live like common people,
I want to do whatever common people do,
I want to sleep with common people,
I want to sleep with common people,
Like you.

Well what else could I do
I said "I'll see what I can do."
I took her to a supermarket,
I don't know why,
But I had to start it somewhere,
So it started there.
I said pretend you've got no money,
She just laughed and said,
"Oh you're so funny."
I said "Yeah?
Well I can't see anyone else smiling in here.
Are you sure you want to live like common people,
You want to see whatever common people see,
You want to sleep with common people,
You want to sleep with common people,
Like me.

Thank you Hampstead (whoever you may be?!).
The point I was trying to get across was the problems caused by the sheer numbers of visitors.
When I was a lad we mainly had Thompson Park or Stoneyholme for our days out. We did venture up Pendle a few times, after having walked from Burnley.
I don’t know what the answer is as this is only February and it wasn’t even a fell race day.

I think they should replace a lot of the fields (all covered in sheep droppings and cow pats anyway!) round there with nice new housing estates. That way a lot of the people that like visiting so much can live there and hence less parking issues. Hey presto...problem solved! :D ;)

Sounds like Benalmadena in July and August. I live a couple of miles outside, but need to go in there for banking, shopping, restaurants etc. No problems for most of the year, but in the tourist season I daren't take my car, it is simply impossible to park anywhere in the whole area. Bloody tourists!!

Arrived at the car park this morning about 9:50. Car park was almost full then. Looked busier than normal for a Sunday as it’s a regular walk for us. Walked up to Black Moss, Stangtop and back via Rouglee. Got back to see the Car park totally bonkers with cars blocking the entrance and cars queuing up waiting for people coming back to leave. Struggled to get out of the car park and onto the road, which was littered with parked cars all the way to Rouglee a mile away.
Never seen it so busy.

I’m interested to know where CaptainKitk goes for day trips.

I assume from his moaning that he doesn’t go anywhere that may in anyway inconvenience anybody that may live local to the place he’s visiting.

How does he get from Barley to the Turf?

I assume he doesn’t take flights from any of the major airports either bearing in mind the issues they have caused for locals.

Apparently plans have been lodged for a multi storey NCP car park which should help the situation.
