Peter Mumby
Did anyone notice the incorrect spelling of his name on the big screen, which was supposed to be wishing him a Happy Birthday?

Re: Peter Mumby
Can't see clearly from my seat the screen but I heard the announcer inform us. It doesn't surprise me though about the misspelling. Remember when Burnley's Hammer-Throw Olympian Sophie Hitchon was introduced to the Turf Moor crowd as a javelin eventer. I believe she never received an official club apology just some person excusing the mistake as "It was what I was told".

Thought he was pretty good (by those days’ standards). Played well in a cup tie at Scunthorpe but they cropped him in the replay.drifted off after that

Re: Peter Mumby
We spotted the error and to make matters worse it wasn't corrected the 2nd time it appeared.
To make a typo is unforgiveable at our level, but to fail to spot the error is even worse.
Also there was an unrecognisable word underneath - I think it said Asselby - that we assume was mean't to be Selby as in "Selby Clarets", but we weren't entirely sure.

I think that's what most of us remember him for. And when they cropped him, we brought on Roger Eli up front for the first time.Garnerssoap wrote:Played well in a cup tie at Scunthorpe but they cropped him in the replay.
And did they really get his name wrong?

It is - IMO - when you're a PL team being exposed to a worldwide audience on SKY TV.Rileybobs wrote:I’m not sure a typo on a birthday message is unforgivable.
It makes us look like an amateur outfit.
Besides if I'd paid to have someone's name on the board, (maybe an RIP), I would consider an error to be pretty unforgivable.

You’ve shown in your original post how easy it is to make a typo. To call it unforgivable is a ludicrous overreaction.nil_desperandum wrote:It is - IMO - when you're a PL team being exposed to a worldwide audience on SKY TV.

And how do you know whether the person who requested the big screen message didn’t make a typo in their request to BFC?

They used to make some horrendous mistakes when we had the half time draw guests, getting names and facts wrong. They had Jim Thomson as a Northern Ireland international once. What they had done is taken the script from something written about Sammy Todd.nil_desperandum wrote:Yes - repeatedly. Munby.

Can't see the new screen from my seat in the JHU. They've got the angles all wrong. I hope there will be a 2nd screen somewhere that I can actually see
Re: Peter Mumby
He was at the game on Saturday, Asselby is correct. Not sure if he saw the message, may find out tomorrow night.

Frank Sinclair won the man of the match once and we announced Trevor Sinclair as the winner.
Making mistakes on the internet is easier - you can at least go back and correct them.

I almost always agree with your posts, but - in this case - there's quite a difference between me quickly posting a message on here and not checking it, to a top PL side posting something that could go round the world.Rileybobs wrote:You’ve shown in your original post how easy it is to make a typo. Your 2nd point is correct but it's stretching the point a bit I think , and in any case, whoever is in charge of this should surely have spotted the error.
An overreaction, maybe a little, but still unacceptable at our level I think.
Comes under the category of should do better.

At the start of the 1989-90 highlights video, it announced him as new signing Peter Bumby. I kid you not!

My favourite was once seeing 'George O'Ghani' in some away programme once. Maybe Rochdale?
I can imagine the scene....
George: "Gaw aaan, git owt o' da way wit ya, to be sure"
Security Guard: "Owww mi head!"

CT, it was Rochdale away and they had his name as George Ogarney. On this theme, didn't Frank Teasdale welcome Glenn Waddle on radio as Burnley's new manager?

I think that on the team sheet for the Halifax programme they might have spelt the home team goalkeeper's name wrong too

I’m led to believe the club came into emails from viewers in Kampala and Abu Dhabi this morning. Mumby has quite a following over there.nil_desperandum wrote:It is - IMO - when you're a PL team being exposed to a worldwide audience on SKY TV.
