Heres my Spikey little garden chum tucking in to his supper. (These pictures were taken last autumn ....)
Saw evidence today (a hedgehog poo) on the lawn, the little buggers alarm clock has gone off early.

So we have put some tea out for him/her tonight....

The food went sometime between 6.30 and 7.30 last night ... the Mrs is going to keep watch tonight.

They had 2 little hoglets last year so we know they are happy living in and around our gardens ....

Will keep the updates and photo's as and when I get them

Hedgehogs are Ace m8 at keeping slimey little pests (Slugs etc) under control.

Plus they aren't dangerous like Bears and Wolves etc

So the Shotgun will stay in the gun cabinet

A hedgehog called Spike gets fed at my house, he certainly gets around.
I fed him on Saturday.
Cactus, Holly Thistle, Thorn and Berberis are also regular callers.

Hopefully the cold weather doesn't set back in again or it will be a killer for lots of animals like hedgehogs who come out of hibernation early due to this unusual hot spell.

Boy the flies and midges were out on massive force today around my gaff .
The temps hit 17c and the little buggers came out of the joints in the windows where they seem to winter as daft as it may seem .
Any time we have guests in the winter we also say don't open the windows , one couple did once and i have to get the hoover out to try collect them all , hey only in the country .

We have a Bertie lookey likey buzzing about today too, feeding at the crocuses and helibores.

Been replacing my pond pump and filter (nearly 20 years old) the filter body starting to crack in various places due to UV hardening the plastic.... so decided its time for a new one.

You have cute little hedgehogs in your backyard, while we have animals that would bite your arm off, if given half a chance. Ever had bear meat? I have. After you've soaked it in beer for a week or two, it's very flavourful, although a little gamey. A friend of mine's wife is from a place called Kenora, which is on the CPR railway line on the way to Winnipeg, and her brother regularly traps pelts and shoots bears, when they get too close to his house. Different strokes for different folks. Oh, and deer meat is a delicacy, too, although I've never had it.

Hedgehogs are little b4stards if you warden a nature reserve with endangered ground-nesting birds...
I've spent many a night carrying the feckers away (in a bucket) from a Little Tern colony here on the IOM.
Similar problems if not worse on the Outer Hebrides.

But they are something of a gardener's friend.

Supposedly Gypsies used to eat Hedgehogs.... They would bop them on the head wrap them in a mud/clay mixture then bake them on an open fire. When they are cooked they would break open the clay which pulled the bristles/Spikes off.

There was a crisp flavour back in the late 80's early 90's called hedgehog flavour supposedly replicating the taste....

Regarding CJW and the removing of hedgehogs from endangered ground nesting bird sights on the IOM and the Outer Hebrides ... are hedgehogs native to these places or have people imported them thinking it would be a good idea.

I was out walking our dog, Ruby, with my youngest son Dan a few years ago.

A very hot day in Accrington Coppice and Dan found a baby hedgehog in the full blaze of the sun and clearly unwell.

We took Ings home and then onto a hog rescue centre in Rochdale who cared for it and let it out into the wild when it was old enough to look after itself.

I'm sure Danny is now well and good.

Have had a family in our garden, in Hest Bank, for a couple of years now. Last night was a first for me, mum, dad and three nippers. Five, never seen five in wild together before.

Mrs blsclaret gives them dog food (obviously) and cat biscuits when they first arrive. Fortunately they crunch the biscuits before any bloomin' cat turns up. And water tubs are always empty in the morning.
Simple pleasures.
