St Augustine’s RC School
Anybody with kids at this school? Or have had them there in the recent past? Anybody live locally to it?
Just wondering what the school was like, if there were any opinions of it, or how it is viewed by those who live locally?

Re: St Augustine’s RC School
My brother is in year 10 or 11 there at the moment (Can’t remember which)
He’s had no problems.
My aunt and uncle actually moved into that area specifically to send one of my cousins there.
I believe it’s viewed as a good school locally.

Re: St Augustine’s RC School
Excellent school. All of my family went there as did my daughters who have gone on to excel both in personal and professional capacities
Re: St Augustine’s RC School
Assume you mean St Augustines RC Secondary in Billington not the primary school in Lowerhouse. The secondary school has a good reputation. I know nothing about the primary school.

Coyle’s kids went there!

Re: St Augustine’s RC School
I have a teacher friend who worked at both Billington and Ribblesdale and Ribblesdale was far the better school by all accounts. But this was 3 or 4 years ago and things might of changed.
But unless it's just for Catholic reasons then I would be looking at Ribblesdale for my child.

Re: St Augustine’s RC School
Getting the right secondary school and then actually getting in is becoming more and more of a challenge up here, guess its the same down there?
We have hundreds of new houses going up, and absolutely naff all infrastructure. Think its worse at primary level but its not good.

St Augustines in Billington has a fantastic reputation and has had for many years. Several members of my family have been there and not managed to drag it down and have gone on to greater things in life.Quickenthetempo wrote:I have a teacher friend who worked at both Billington and Ribblesdale and Ribblesdale was far the better school by all accounts. Families still move into the Hyndburn / Ribble Valley areas to secure a place there.

The general consensus being Catholic schools are stricter.
But as we know teachers move about and things change. Most parents now are trying to get their kids in Ribblesdale from our area.

Catholic schools are more strict, perhaps, and are definitely selective.

What could possibly go wrong with putting your children into the pastoral and educational machinery of the Catholic Church?

Re: St Augustine’s RC School
A 3 of my lads went there. Ages now are 27, 33 & 44.
Unique school I'm today's world. Strict dress code, pupils are very well mannered, respectful and grounded.
10 out of ten!

Good job that they had a good sports teacher as their dad couldn't kick a football, hit a cricket ball or knock a golf ball in a straight line.nighty wrote:got to agree with bob the scutter.....mine are 18 / 21 / 23 and all did extremely well going through the school there ....quite strict and dont let the kids get away with a lot ,which in the modern society is a good thing , also has very good sports teachers that will bring the best out of the kids

You will have to pass me one down from your suite.
You should have done Catterick races this afternoon.

Re: St Augustine’s RC School
its a long way up to were you will be sitting to pass any food , i did think of doing catterick on way up but im seeing a couple of customers up in newcastle so not really possible ..
Re: St Augustine’s RC School
Not that this should sway your decision in any way, but the school uniform colours were changed to Claret and Blue by the last-but-one Headteacher (Philip Morris) who was a keen Claret! (Just saying, like!)
And it IS a very good school.

Re: St Augustine’s RC School
Great school had a small hiccup when McNamara left but by all accounts thriving. I hope you support the Catholic ethos and attend regular masses and put money in the collection plate to support Catholic education and don't want your children to attend for other reasons such as selection criteria .
Re: St Augustine’s RC School
They have n't changed at St Augustine's. I'm a parent and the school received an outstanding inspection 18 months ago.Quickenthetempo wrote:Yes, a lot of kids from my town Padiham go there and have for many years.

The thread is about this particular, well managed school, not about peadophiles that prey on scout and guides movements, choirs, football teams, churches, swimming pools, young impressionable girls and any area where children gather.ZizkovClaret wrote:Not without foundation, you would have to acknowledge, surely?
I suppose some of them get more publicity than others when things sadly go wrong

And you just know that, in the unlikely eventuality of it “sadly going wrong”, the Catholic Church will diligently root out the sick individuals concerned and hand them directly over to the Police.Chip Harrison wrote:The thread is about this particular, well managed school, not about peadophiles that prey on scout and guides movements, choirs, football teams, churches, swimming pools, young impressionable girls and any area where children gather.

Re: St Augustine’s RC School
I went there and left in 2003.
Was a good school back then and I hear it still is.
I ended up with 8 Cs which is far better than what I would have got if I had gone somewhere with less discipline

Wasn't there a nonce at Stonyhurst who quickly got shipped off to Aus? That's what my dad told me anyway. Perhaps he was making sure I was aware of it before sending off to a Catholic school.
