No, not the bloke who played Frasier's dad in 'Frasier'. The Welsh international midfielder who played most of his career with Stoke City. I was browsing back copies of the Burnley Express - 1966 on the library's microfiche, and in particular the sports section. Many names from Burnley's reserve and youth teams were mentioned, some with team photographs, which took me back as I remember watching some of them play..
One particular photo was the youth team with a caption 'stars of the future?' or something similar....in the photo was one John Mahoney...which looked very much like the afore mentioned. Wikipedia has him signed to Crewe Alex - March 1966....the photo in question was a month or so before then.
Do any UTC posters remember John Mahoney being at Turf Moor? ( I realise that quite a few young lads probably passed through here without making it but went on to have a decent career elsewhere )
If it is THE John Mahoney, I would be quite surprised.

Our biggest miss from that era would be big Chris Nicholl, who had an excellent career. Mahoney was a fine footballer also.

Yeah, Chris Nicholl was mentioned often ...certainly one who made it after leaving here. Capped for Northern Ireland as well (although he wasn't an Ulsterman)

Some less than familiar names (for some maybe) that I came across were: John McGarty, Ken Lunn, Peter Bourne, Gary France, Dominic McCullum, Stephen Done, ? Shepherd, Tony Morrin.
In one article there certainly was a star of the future for the Clarets as Burnley bound Dave Thomas starred for Durham schoolboys v. Lancashire on the Turf. I remember attending it as a 9 year old.

Saw Gary France in the first team at Maine Rd. around 66-67. We lost the game 4-2. I think his career may have been affected by a car accident but I stand corrected on that.

Later players here as kids even briefly, Steve Bruce and John Aldridge spring to mind off the top of my head.

Was John Mahoney from Wales - what was our scouting network there - we got Taffy and Flynnie?

He was born in Cardiff, where his father played Rugby, then came to the Manchester area as a youth and started his football career with Ashton Utd. I'm certain it's him in the photo (he's mentioned by name and fits the age range) and I'm guessing that he may have been a trialist and just managed to get on a team photo....
