Cold Turkey

Post by Healeywoodclaret » Wed Mar 06, 2019 2:49 pm

Any regular drinkers on here ever gone cold turkey and suffered any effects of alcohol withdrawal? Apparently going cold turkey can be harmful and people should consider tapering off their alcohol consumption gradually. Has anyone on here any experience of this either themselves a friend or loved one? It would be interesting to know your thoughts.

If you, or someone you know, is drinking enough that if you stop then you would suffer withdrawal effects then you need more professional advice.

There's also this self assessment test on drinkaware that will help know if the amount of alcohol consumed is dangerous.

I had pneumonia in 2001 in Winchester and they gave me alcohol tablets in hospital because they said that in my condition if I came straight off alcohol I might die of shock or whatever, I can't remember.

if Someone who seriously drinks goes cold turkey they can be at risk of seizures and it’s best to do it with healthcare professionals around, either in hospital or a detox facility

The only meds given when detoxing are chlordiazapoxide for the shakes and feeling sh*t and IV pabrinex for vitamin deficiency.

I was asking on behalf of a friend who suffers from high blood pressure and instead of taking hypertension meds has opted for lifestyle changes to try and bring it under control. There are no other symptoms except since stopping the booze the blood pressure readings are higher! Just wondered whether this could be classed as a symptom of alcohol withdrawal? Or is it simply stress that is causing it?

Although alcohol can be a contributing factor for hypertension it is more often than not elevated for a variety of reason. Poor diet, genetics, being a bloke, stress, low exercise tolerance etc etc. Stopping drinking might help reduce the blood pressure but if it is caused due to a multitude of reasons then it won’t.

If I was him/her I’d change my lifestyle and take the meds. If the blood pressure normalises then reduce and ultimately stop the meds

Sorry to answer the original question I don’t believe alcohol withdrawal increases blood pressure

Alchoholics often deny they have issues. They need help and fair play to HWC for taking the first step.
