Re: Marvin Sordell....depression
People think that footballers have no reason to be depressed, but depression doesn’t think “oh he’s rich and successful I’ll go onto Bill the factory worker instead”ClaretAndJew wrote:This thread opitimises why men don't talk about depression.
Chances are you’ll be working, living or good friends with somebody with some form of depression and they are doing their best to hide it.
Talk, listen be there for somebody.
You never know, they may need to be there for you someday

Re: Marvin Sordell....depression
Depression affects all kinds of people from all walks of life, rich or poor it takes no prisoners, a nasty condition for anyone to have, its not easy to detect, even from the people living around you, i went through a bad time myself until i spoke about it, took a few months taking meds and a bit of counselling to get me feeling some bit like, so if you or someone you know seems to be depressed, TALK TO SOMEONE. All the best to Sordell.

Re: Marvin Sordell....depression
Happy to say that my doctor has said that I am now able to come off my meds that I have been on for 9 years. Started reducing my intake 3 weeks ago and all is going well so far. It has been a long hard road, but the future is the brightest it has been for what seems like an eternity. 67 this year and looking to get back to work. If you can be patient with the sufferer it will be a massive help for them.

Listened to an excellent interview with 'dr phil' on joe roegan on the drive home. Highly recommended. And he advocates drugs as a last resort. And hes a doctor in america!

Re: Marvin Sordell....depression
Sounds like what i went through Darnhill. The ten years from 2007 are a complete write off for me, following a depression driven mental breakdown. Been off the meds for over a year now and am now back in education (having lost touch with all tech since 2007) getting my English and History degrees. I still take it one day at a time, but luckily now I can spot "black dog" days and accept there are times when there is just no point mentally beating myself up that I just can't "pull myself together" which in itself helps quicken my recovery. Good luck and I'm always available for anyone needing a non-judgemental chat with someone who avoided section on at least 4 occasions (to my knowledge) where a strong family unit saved me that stigma.Darnhill Claret wrote:Happy to say that my doctor has said that I am now able to come off my meds that I have been on for 9 years. Re: Marvin Sordell....depression
By far the best tip I can give is to recognize them for what they are. You will find yourself unable to concentrate and agitated. Quick to temper (even when you don't know why) and probably suffer from what they call "Procrastinating Perfectionism" - putting off jobs convinced you cannot do them justice, or worse still re-doing things over an over again (for the littlest minute benefit) which is a form of OCD connected to PP.... I spent three days doing 12 hour sessions writing an essay, which is when I realized I still did it even now, but have the "wellness" to have recognized and looked into methods of overcoming it. Overthinking everything is also a clear sign... I find myself worrying about conversations I had thirty years ago. There are now some very good mental wellbeing sites that can really help. For example one such site I found the answer for writing my academic essays which I now use for all my work.Shore claret wrote:I'm currently in the middle of a marriage break up and I know not seeing my kids every day is going to seriously affect me, anyone got any tips for staving off the lows?
Mainly it is finding what works for you, but don't be ashamed of your feelings, recognize them and work with them for what they are. Remember always depression is an illness that invariably effects deep thinkers of often higher than normal intellegence... you are in the company of some of the greatest minds of all time.

I do over analise things to the point of sending myself in a right muddle and getting in a real mess.elwaclaret wrote:By far the best tip I can give is to recognize them for what they are. Re: Marvin Sordell....depression
Yep. Know it well. Keep a pen and paper on you, lists work for me... when I realize I'm going over the same ground from a new angle it acts of proof of what my mind is up to... at that point with time and mind training you will be able to consciously stop and "box it" as I call it. I actually love that I can now switch thoughts on and off at will in a way I never even knew was possible... but it takes time to master and even now there are days when I just have to hold my hands up to "one of those days"... but like I said spotting it and rolling with it when you have to in itself helps overcome the worst of depressions longer-term effects... usually in the form of some unwarranted self-reproach or other.Shore claret wrote:I do over analise things to the point of sending myself in a right muddle and getting in a real mess.
