35

First row of cookies = 30 (10 chocolate chips x 3)

14 - 10 = 4, 4/2 = 2 (each banana = 1)

8 - 2 = 6, 6/2 = 3, alarm clock = 3

Final cookie has 7 choc chips, 3 + 1 + 1 x 7 = 35

edit- last alarm clock is 2 o clock (resolution much?)

2 + 1 + 1 x 7 = 28

edit 2 - multiplication first. ********. 2 + 1 + (1x7) = 10

OK. I got the multiply, but didn't notice that the 2 bananas had been replaced by single bananas - and then I didn't notice that the clock had rotated, and it now showed 2 o'clock (or, is it still just a smiley face tilted to one side)?

We all use calculators too much these days, so many would have calc'd from left to right.

And, until I tried it out just now, I'd no idea whether excel would give the correct answer without adding the (implied) brackets.

Please don't, or at least not if you don't want to fill their head with a shoddy understanding of algebra. 10-chip cookie, banana pair and alarm clock can all be assigned values a, b and c but the data set becomes inconsistent in the final line. You can't just tell a student to suddenly infer what a, b, or c mean. The puzzle is mathematically consistent right up until the problem. This is not how you do algebra! Please don't show them this.

For example;

a + a + a = 30

b + b + a = 14

b + c + c = 8

all mathematically consistent, then you shout

BOOBS + PECKER + PECKER x ARSE = ?

That's a bad question.

(Lemon 3 +1 Banana)+(1 Banana x Cookie 10) = 14

You're right, didn't see the half bunch of bananas in the final line. But that, as of itself would make for a good mathematical discussion.

Perhaps it's easier to remember that whatever the times bit in the equation is, is in imaginary brackets.

Agreed. You could just as easily determine that a biscuit was worth 20 but that the bits of rabbit poo on them were worth minus one each as you needed to pick them off

I see 28 and I see 70 and both can be correct, but for the life of me I don’t see 10

Count the chocolate chips, bananas and time on the clock. It’s different each time.
Then bodmas
