Lack of Craft Beer on draft in Burnley.

Post by CopacabanaClaret » Mon Mar 11, 2019 2:19 pm

Firstly I don't like the term craft beer but I can't think of a better term to describe it.
Secondly I'm not talking about Real Ales. There is no shortage of places to get a half decent pint of ale in the town.
There are many amazing breweries all over the North selling varied, interesting craft beers. Cloudwater, Track, Wander Beyond, Alphabet in Manchester. Buxton Brewery. North Brewing and Northern Monk in Leeds. Magic Rock in Huddersfield, Wylam up in Newcastle and many others. Absolutely none of which are available anywhere on draft in Burnley. The Bridge has a few cans in the fridge but that's about it.
Hebden Bridge has lots of places, including the excellent Vocation & co, even Todmorden and Clitheroe have decent stuff.
Cant help feeling that as usual Burnley is 5 years behind everywhere else.

I'd be surprised if anywhere was 5 years behind Todmorden

Obviously nobody wants to drink it or they would ask their landlords to put it on.

Craft will have had its day soon enough my son!

5 trillion "micro breweries" all vying to shove as many hops into a beer as isn't possible and at a mere £10 a can.

The greats will last though. Which is the main thing.

Its Moretti in my local, then your usual pish like Carling, Coors and Fosters.

Its an odd one because whilst I wouldn't drink Fosters even if it was free, its probably one of the best selling lagers in the town. I do think beer snobs that like it to be known that they wouldn't touch the stuff (and I include myself in that)

I love trying new beers and always look forward to trying new bars that have a decent choice, I'm happy enough with Moretti though

Not Burnley, but the Tapsters Promise in Colne has 'craft' keg lines.

The Golden Lion and it's on site bottle shop Tor Beers have a good craft selection.
But other than that, point taken about Todmorden.

As much as I like Craft Beer(and there are some tasty ones out there), I can’t help but think that the better name for it, that the OP was searching for, is probably Expensive Home Brew. There’s definitely an air of Emperor’s New Clothes about some of the stuff. The same goes for ‘small batch’ gin, too.

The Banker's Draft micro pub in Barrowford is truly excellent . Constantly changing range of ales and had some fantastic pints in there.
Over in Colne both The Tapsters Promise and Boyce's Barrell near the top of Newmarket Street are very good also. Didn't Boyce's barrel open an offshoot in Padiham ?
Good small business opening in Burnley I would have thought.

Not the worst idea. I reckon there's a gap in the market.
Would need to have a few on cask to keep that Camra lot happy.

These beers don't do it for me. They are 'technical drinks' for 'technical drinkers.' It's Long Life beer and tastes like it. I have a distant memory of Ind Coope actually calling their brand Long Life.

They are a bit fizzy and cold and Alka-Seltza-ish. It's not an easy drinking pint, there's no soft sweet and gentle craft beer, as far as I've tasted.
Also it's comes at a price, it's for the 25-35 yrs-old Yuppy market and definitely a 'market product.'

Having said that I had a 2/3 pint of The Kernel 6.5% for £4.40 at the local micro-bar, last weekend. OK for a 'long-life' drink i.e. takes ages to drink it.

How much is Carling then?

I'd stick to that if I were you. Must be about 30p a pint going off those markups!

I like beer, craft or real, but I do love my IPAs. As for Moretti - to my taste buds, it's just a step up from Carling and Fosters.

Tod's fine these days - also there's a better class of hooligan over there.
Housing, etc becoming expensive though - being pushed along by Hebden.

Have to say, I'm a big fan of craft beer. I love being able to go out and order something different and interesting every time I go to the bar. I can't even imagine going back to the days of drinking pint after pint of the same thing.

Pretty much my view as well these days and the point of this thread. There really isn't much variety available in Burnley.

Same here too. I'd rather drink different and interesting beers at home than spend an entire evening sloshing the same or similar crap down my throat.

I went down Burnley to watch the Arsenal game over the XMAS period. I was pleasantly surprised to see several new bars specialing in decent local beers. There a couple near the back of what was paradise island, and one across from smacks which are new to me.

I was also shocked to see several people doing Coke in the toilet at midday

7 microbreweries now in Cruces and 2 liquor /gin places. Population 85000 about the same as Burnley. And you can get an amazing green Chile cheeseburger in every one :)

Best choice of craft beer I've ever seen on my last trip to the States. Portland, Oregon was something else.

Actually, very hoppy craft beers should be drunk as fresh as possible. In some cases a very short life to taste as the brewer intended.

Maybe, maybe not. Entirely depends on the brewer and their intentions with the beer.

Draught craft beer is long-life, it's vacuum pack or something, I had a word with the micro-pub owner, it's a new system. It's the equivalent of coffee capsules for a machine. Shows that the owner isn't a specialist, though obviously has set up that bit. Mind you, a lot of real ale folk think why bother caring for these customers? Rarely are standards maintained, real ale has gone to the quick-buck parasites.

At least Infiniti cars are pulling out of the UK...
