Being fined

Post by Steve1956 » Wed Mar 13, 2019 3:20 pm

For missing an hospital appointment ,my elderly Mum has just told me she has a reminder for an hospital appointment and if she fails to attend she will be fined £160
Surely this isn't correct....is it?

If you miss an appointment you are usually referred back to your GP.

That's not true.. My wife just got one and it says " missed appointments cost the NHS £160 for each one missed.. Your mum has misunderstood the message .

I’ve had two appointments with GP practice in the last week and have had text reminders and even instructions on how to cancel. A staggering number of appointments are not kept.

Which makes it more annoying when you have to call them at 8am if you need an appointment that day ......

I needed one other week and was told I could have one in Barnoldswick :?

The appointments have been with the nurse. I made an appointment a week last Monday to see the doctor and it’s not until April.

As others have said, thing your mum has missunderstood it’s a statement that missed appointments cost £160 not that she will be fined.

Far too many hospital appointments are missed which are wasted as, if they were cancelled would be reallocated.

This means the hospital doesn’t get paid for that appointment slot as only paid per attendance and that has to be rebooked.
Depending on the specialty, would depend if they are discharged back to their GP

I think it would be a good idea to have a financial incentive to attend but not 160 quid though. My wife works for the NHS and the number of "no shows" is staggering. I think some form of "three strikes and your out" might work as well with regular offenders having to pay for future appointments.

I agree. I wasn't meaning to be draconian but if people abuse it, it shouldn't be everybody else's problem (not a popular concept these days- everybody's got an excuse for everything).
