His fist call up?

Probably not what he was expecting...

I must say I thought he'd bypass that level and go straight into the U21 squad, having made such a fool of Alexander Arnold last Sunday. But good on him, and if he keeps playing like he is, he'll not be on that stepping stone very long.

The midfielders in the U21 squad are quite good/experienced/established

Harvey Barnes (Leicester City), Hamza Choudhury (Leicester City), Tom Davies (Everton), Kieran Dowell (Sheffield United, on loan from Everton), Phil Foden (Manchester City), James Maddison (Leicester City), Ryan Sessegnon (Fulham)

With respect, McNeil has made more of an impact in the Premier League this season than any of them, with the possible exception of Maddison.

Foden is still all about potential isn't he?
I don't know much about Choudhury but looks like he has less experience than McNeil.

I suppose it's down to the England coaches who've seen more of them.

bit blinkered spice, need to account for the experienced and established and as good as we believe Dwight is - Hudson-Odoi (new cap) has had more of an impact (and goals) at Chelsea and has represented England at all youth levels and is a world cup winner.

It seems the England set up has changed how it works nowadays. Like each tier has a squad much bigger than you can actually name. There is an argument he could be in the U21s but now he’s in the U20 he’ll be in the system. He’ll be kept an eye on more closely than ever.

Harvey Barnes - 626 minutes of Premier League football.
Phil Foden - 96 minutes.
Hudson-Odoi - 103 minutes
Hamza Choudhury - 335 minutes
Tom Davies - 966 minutes
Kieran Dowell - 432 minutes of Championship football

Dwight McNeil - 976 minutes. He's playing every week, at a consistently high level, in games where we're desperate for points.

Yes - I don't disagree that McNeil has not been in the system, for whatever reason, which I suspect is more about the fact that young kids at Burnley don't make the radar in the same way (I always remember the day about 10 years ago when we had two 20 year olds in the team - one who had lots of U-21 caps, and one who'd been overlooked for them to that point. The one with the caps was Nathan Delfouneso, who played for Villa, the one without was Jay Rodriguez, who played for Burnley).

Dwight intimated that he was being called up for the u20s in his Claret Player interview after the Liverpool game. He said he had spoken to the u21s but the main interest was with the u20s.

As has been said earlier in this thread you just have to get a foot in the door and once you are in the system you are always in with a shout when future squad selection is being considered

In which case:

Dominic Solanke - 208 minutes
Tammy Abraham - playing in the Championship
Ademola Lookman - 535 minutes
Hudson-Odoi - 103 minutes
Reiss Nelson - 559 minutes in the Bundesliga

Lewis Richardson is already in the system which is also great news for our Academy - as that helps with recruitment and means are youth set-ups will be watched more regularly by the England set-up.

I imagine the Elite Player Performance Plan impact on Academies has a significant impact on players getting into the England system early and our Academy Status upgrade has improved both the quality and visibility of the players we are able to attract and develop

From what I’ve seen of him he’s been superb on the wing for us but not so when in mid-field.

I think Ryan Sessegnon has been the flop of the season given the expectation put on him.

That turn he put on Winks and Son at the Turf was in central midfield.

Harvey Barnes spent the first half of the season on loan at West Brom, where he played well alongside Gayle and Jay Rod, so I'd say his selection is justified

You do realize how young he is and playing in the Premier League?

I do know and the unrest at Fulham won't have helped but like many young 'superstars' he has been blown out of proportion. He looked good in the Championship but he hasn't stepped up with any impact yet unlike for example Jaydon Sanchez has in the Bundesliga.

I know he could come good in time but he was 'predicted' to be one to watch and for that reason I feel he has disappointed.

Let’s be honest, if he was at any other team in the PL than BFC he wouldn’t be fupping around in the U20s. Looking at the list of who else has been called up I’ve only heard of Tavernier and Field. Selection to the age group sides for England seems to rest very much on who you play for. Mark Ford anyone?

You can't really compare Fulham to Borussia Dortmund. If Sessegnon was playing for Dortmund I reckon it would be a different story.
