VPN is it worth it ...?
Recently went with SpiderVPN as its one of the few that gives a pretty decent free router my question is for the UTC tech guys is just how effective is VPN ? I use it to protect my iptv for the 3pm prem matches although I believe it has many other benefits ...?

I'm well aware of what a VPN is and does. I just won't recommend one for someone such as yourself.

Then you're ignorant of the potential uses of a VPN.Jakubclaret wrote:That’s the only reason I’d use it.

Re: VPN is it worth it ...?
I don't recommend people use free VPNs. For the most part, free VPNs need to make money one way or another. That tends to be through the logging of your personal information and browsing activity which is then sold to third parties. This is of course very silly because aside from being able to unblock geo-restricted content (Netflix US, ESPN etc), a VPN should keep you safer online.
A VPN basically encrypts your device's traffic and routes it through another server. In doing so, you're provided with a different IP address and thus your true location isn't revealed. For those of you based in the UK, it's worth knowing that the UK is part of the Five Eyes intelligence alliance and laws such as the Investigatory Powers Act drastically reduce the privacy of citizens. For example, web and phone companies are required to store records of websites visited by their customers for 12 months. Did you know that they were keeping that sort of information about you?
In summary, find a good paid VPN that has a strict no logs policy, preferably in a country that doesn't have any data retention laws. ExpressVPN is located in the British Virgin Islands and is one of the best I've used. NordVPN is a Panama-based VPN and also works very well. Can provide more info if anyone needs it.

If you're ever using public wi-fi (phone, tablet or computer) you should be using a VPN. It's not an issue over here (yet) but in the US at least some of the ISPs track people's web browsing for marketing purposes and actually insert adverts into webpages at the ISP level. Again, a VPN would prevent.
More generally, if you don't want your ISP tracking what you're doing (bit-torrent {does anyone still use this}, illegal streams, generally none of their business) then use a VPN.
They don't work particularly well for location shifting nowadays (e.g. getting US Netflix in the UK or Iplayer when you're not in the UK) as most of the big streaming companies actively block VPN addresses. It might work for a while but there's no guarantee it will carry on working.
Don't use a free one. If there's no obvious charge then chances are that they're monetising you and your data. Private Internet Access and Nord are two with good reputations, there are others as well. Speed will partly depend on what it's running on (encrypting and decrypting stuff involves lots of calculations) but using PIA I still 100Mbps or so

Re: VPN is it worth it ...?
The reason why a lot of people are using VPNs is so they can watch 3pm Saturday games. The Prem league can block these streams on UK servers only. So connecting to a foreign server via VPN means they can’t legally block you. It also protects your devices from being hacked. Netflix blocks most VPN’s but not all. For instance if you use Express VPN they can advise which servers to connect to in order to get around it. Good VPNs cost from around £2 per month and you don’t need any new equipment.

Re: VPN is it worth it ...?
A VPN is vital if you use WiFi hotspots in public areas like airports and coffee shops etc.
