Good luck to the lad...
Could he be the lad Joey B was on about last week when he said "he was signing/signed someone from Burnley"

Re: ARTICLE: Fowler joins Fleetwood
As someone with only passing interest in what’s going on at youth level I was surprised to see he’d been released. Did the aficionados expect it?
He seemed to be a regular scorer for us and is still only 17.
The fact that a League One club have taken him suggests some talent. The majority of our released scholars seem to end up far further down the football pyramid.

Its a sad truth m8 but 90% of football scholars finish up down the leagues ... many are called but few make the grade.agreenwood wrote:As someone with only passing interest in what’s going on at youth level I was surprised to see he’d been released. Did the aficionados expect it?

We are raving about a certain young man called Dwight McNeil .... he was a product of Manures youth system and didn't make it....

Oh, I know that, but from afar he seemed to be one of the stars of the youth set-up and still very young.Bosscat wrote:Its a sad truth m8 but 90% of football scholars finish up down the leagues ... many are called but few make tge grade
Re: ARTICLE: Fowler joins Fleetwood
There may be sound reasons as to why this youth player was not kept on the books at Burnley. Is it not the hope of all fans that a goal scorer will be unearthed form their club's youth system? Michael seemed to be one of those 'in the making.'
We have Ageyie scoring lots of goals in the U23's but not getting any kind of 'look in' despite the dearth of goals at the moment from our main strikers.

Possibly it means that they have others in the youth set up who they feel have greater potential or are already closer and so it is highly unlikely he will ever get the chance barring an injury crisis of epic proportions?Leisure wrote:Does that mean that he thinks all the other youth players are possibly going to make the 1st team!!

I know some academy’s that build a team around 2-3 players, just to help their development. Man Utd have been doing it for yearsLeisure wrote:Does that mean that he thinks all the other youth players are possibly going to make the 1st team!!

that would be schoolboy Lewis Richardson - I suspect his exploits have led to a a thinning out of strikers above him to give him room to develop

It's still early days but the development squad and U18s seem to have come on a lot this season,in only their first full seasons in the new Barnfield Centre.
In one sense it's sad to see Fowler go, but it also means that we are setting the bar higher. That can only be a good thing in the long run.

Well, yes - but the emphasis is on the possibly.Leisure wrote:Does that mean that he thinks all the other youth players are possibly going to make the 1st team!!
To paraphrase what Steve Stone said at the time, "some may be surprised by a few of the decisions but we've decided to be tighter in who we offer professional contracts because we looking, as a club, to increase standards".
That's not a direct quote but rather the gist of what I remember reading.
It's still surprising though, especially with him being so young. Here's hoping it's not a decision we come to regret in a few years but at the same time good luck to the young lad.

Never good to see players with good records go from our youth set up. If it is one we regret though it’s because of this move that we’d regret it as he’d never get a chance to discover his potential here which wouldn’t be fair on the lad.Rowls wrote:Well, yes - but the emphasis is on the possibly.

I have a feeling he’ll be a Championship striker in a few years time and score a few goals but it wouldn’t be right to sit him on the bench 3 games a season and stop him playing competitive league football, which seems why we’ve released him.

. thinks they let Fowler go because he’s never going to reach 6ft1, which seems to be the minimum height players need to be do get any worthy game time up front for Burnley.

I’m assuming the coaching staff who have worked with him on a daily basis over the past few years have a lot better idea on whether they think he’s good enough for the current level we play at.

Indeed. No point discussing it at all then, eh?

Re: ARTICLE: Fowler joins Fleetwood
To be honest, I was very surprised. Had someone told me we'd only be keeping three of them then I would have expected Michael Fowler to be one of them. He scores goals for fun, but so did Wes Fletcher, Shay McCartan and Jason Gilchrist at that level for us (admittedly in a lower league).agreenwood wrote:As someone with only passing interest in what’s going on at youth level I was surprised to see he’d been released. What was strange was Stone talking about him a week or so before when he said that Fowler would be sold for big money one day, then a week later he's gone.
But ....
This is the point. I, and the others who watch the youth team, see him play games and nothing more. They will have seen any positives and weaknesses he has, they will be able to make a far better judgement than any of us can. I also remember eli one morning down at Gawthorpe saying that we always think our players are better than they are simply because we want them to be.Steve-Harpers-perm wrote:I’m assuming the coaching staff who have worked with him on a daily basis over the past few years have a lot better idea on whether they think he’s good enough for the current level we play at.
Michael Fowler is a really good lad with his feet on the ground and I'm really pleased he's landed himself a contract with a league club.

Re: ARTICLE: Fowler joins Fleetwood
Scoring goals Is arguably one of the toughest things a player can learn. Its the most instinctive of all skills. I am sure they have done loads of analysis on other factors. But the fact he is apparently a good egg makes it even stranger.
That said when Jay Rodriguez came through there were players who had scored more than him or were more physical than him (at that stage) and were released ahead of him. And that was the right decision.
