Love his stand up, can’t be done with his sitcoms. Cringe humour.

Never been a fan, always been irritated by his apparent belief that he is a natural comedian, and irritated by RG's use of the fxxk word every other sentence as if it is clever.

But this was an absolute masterpiece. A cameo about finding purpose in life when today lots of young folks are ending their's, and brilliant acting by a brilliant cast. Genius.

Loved it. Very funny and extremely sad . Well acted. I like his stand up, really enjoyed the office and still think extras is total comedic genius. This was totally different. Laugh out loud moments contrasted with deep believable sorrow. If your not a Gervais fan you wont like it, if you are you will.

Good stuff indeed and for anyone who didn't watch Derek, give it a go. Beautifully done.

Bog standard Ricky Gervais sitcom. Identical to the last ones.

I wish he’d make something with Stephen Merchant again.

Define genius. RG certainly isn't one. Einstein was.

About half way through it and really enjoying it

Not based on cringe like some of his other stuff

I loved the office but IMO he has never got anywhere near that since. Extras was ok at best and Derek was dreadful. His films have all been pretty poor as well.

Afterlife however is excellent

Thought it was brilliant. Really enjoyable. The only negative for me was the turnaround was a bit rushed and only came about in the last episode. Seeing as Gervais tends to like to make two series and a Christmas special I thought the transformation could have been more gradual.

"Comedic genius" . Other than riding a bycicle one time in public, I don't class the brilliance of Herr Einstein in the comedy genre. Sorry

I thought Derek was sh1t, is this any better?

RG seems a bit marmite, a lot of people I know think he's great, a lot think he's crap, I'm in the latter.

It’s a bit soppy but really well written and acted , I love RG’s stand up mainly because he’s not a natural comedian per se but his material generally high quality . Always hard to follow a classic like the office though extras was good Derek decent as well and I’m one of s few that enjoyed the Warwick Davis life’s too short . His films have been pretty p1ss poor though . Office movie was good in parts but missed that ultra essential of any “ tv” comedy a great supporting cast .

It was enjoyable but I think 'genius' is pushing it a bit - there are some problems with it. He uses his characters as a philosophical soap box far too often, they go on minute long monologues about religion or something else he wants to get off his chest. Failing that, they're trying to hard to be poignant in a way that is completely unnatural to the way people speak 99% of the time. It feels forced down your throat. There are too many characters too, that he's trying to squeeze into the broader narrative. The drug addict, the trainee journalist, the prostitute, the boss/brother-in-law, the other office staff, his wife via video, the mourner at the grave, the postman, the shrink, the carer, his dad etc. And most of them are in different places!
In less than 30 mins he's trying to portray a load of meaningful relationships all over the show, which is impossible, so they don't build like they did in the office for example, just just land fully formed with overly-sentimental dialogue to make us believe they mean something to each other. Also it could have been funnier! I did laugh a few times, but he didn't make the most of the fact this guy had found a superpower whereby he didn't care about living or dying and who he offended along the way. There were a few times it was used to comic effect but before we knew it he'd abandoned this viewpoint and decided to be a better man.
He clearly watched and enjoyed the Detectorists too, as the whole setting strives for the same atmosphere but in my opinion doesn't get close.
Having said that I quite enjoyed it :D

Haven’t tried this yet, but I’m a massive fan of The Office and Extras. I really didn’t like Derek, something about him playing a disabled character was a bit wrong.
