Both Walters and Burnley have been very unlucky.

He will go down as Burnley's most costly mistake and probably most expensive pound per minute player in our history to date.

Shame, I thought he'd be a useful addition, but hands up I was wrong and all those questioning the signing were right.

Purely down to age, record, contract length and fee/wages I presume.

Thought he would have been a decent signing, but I thought that about Taylor toom, but he suffered to.
Suppose it's the risk you take, however he was certainly no where need the mould of the Reid signing as some suggest.

I still believe had Walters been injury free he would of been a very important player for us.

Sad news, barring misfortune he could have been a good signing for us and I was hoping that his loan to Ipswich might rejuvenate him. Unfortunately that wasn't the case.

Even the fans that might question our signing of him can't argue that he went down fighting for every inch in the last match he played for us and he has done everything possible to try and make it back. Obviously his heart is still in the game, but when the body says no it takes a wise person to admit it.

Based on his recent forays into the media limelight I think he will do well if he decides to pursue that path with the same relentless vigour he showed on the pitch throughout his career. For me he would represent a substantial upgrade on "seems like a reasonably nice guy, but sit down, eat your crisps and shut up Linekar" who is getting very stale and rapidly approaching his sell by date.

Given his football experience and more importantly his life experience I could also imagine Jon filling a player liaison role. An impartial bridge between the players of a club and a management team. The presence of trained psychologists can help with that, along with the team captain. However, having someone who is one step removed from the team, with direct experience of what it means to be a player and all that entails in the modern game, can contribute as much or possibly more to the well being of others.

The world has enough agents looking out for the financial well being of players, but it might benefit from more people looking out for other aspects of a players well being.

After a distinguished career it's time to relax.

Not that it mattered much as we got knocked out the next round against Olympiacos, but I thought Joe Hart and Walters were really important against Istanbul Basaksehir; was obvious the amount of European experience that they had.

Shame, he could have been a good player for a couple of seasons for us.

It is a shame that we never saw the best of him.

Though with hindsight, hopefully a wake up call to the club on signing older players at the end of their careers.

Whilst nobody could have foreseen the injury the age and contract length have proved to be a very costly mistake.in terms if wages paid for return on the pitch it is probably the most costly mistake in the clubs recent history.

Said at the time a strange signing and proved to be a very expensive one at that but good luck to him going forward

We paid a £3,5m fee for him so suspect he will have still been on decent wages at that point. At a guess at least 30k per week.

By my maths we’ve paid £5.5 million out for 3 league appearances and no goals. Of this he has earned £2.5 million. If we are paying him until July you can add another £500,000 on to his earnings. All this wishing him well scenario is all well and good but it had been nothing short of abysmal financially for a club that doesn’t seem able to afford anything.

There appears to be a never ending obsession with people talking about fees/wages wasted when players don't feature too often.

Believe it or not you need to build squads and with the huge tv monies it's an inevitability that you will end up subsidising certain individuals for what appears to be little return.

It's called being in the Premier League and giving us the finest times in our generation, so on behalf of our top class manager i would like to offer on behalf of the club our apologies for getting things appallingly wrong.

On a more serious note, Walters was the template of a Dyche player and it's a real shame that he couldn't contribute, because make no mistake he would have been an asset if fit.

Steven Reid's job is still available.

And so there should be when we are regularly told we "Can't afford" "won't be held to ransom" " Can't compete with wages X,Y and Z club offer" "fell 1m short on player valuation" etc etc

We plead poverty, refuse to pay certain fees/wages, yet have made a catalogue of costly errors employing aging pros that are either not fit for the job or don't feature, and the irony is we opt for these as we don't want to spend an extra few quid in the first place.
