Port Vale owner

Post by Tricky Trevor » Sun Mar 24, 2019 11:04 am

Just heard them discussing Norman Smurthwaite on Quests EFL show.
I’d never heard of the guy so wikied him.
This tickled me. “The Football League assigned Blackpool chairman Karl Oyston as his mentor.”
No wonder they are in the doodoo.

Another who keeps landing on his feet. “Smurthwaite was raised in Radford, Coventry, and bought his own home in the area at the age of 16 after receiving compensation from an industrial accident at Dunlop in 1977.[1] He qualified as an engineer and inherited an engineering firm in Holbrooks at the age of 21 .”

Cheers, Chester. The bit on Quest that grabbed my attention was that he owns the club and also owns the ground but through another company. Ian Holloway was on and saying this has occurred at two of his previous clubs and is a disaster waiting to happen.
Sorry if this has been discussed on the magic money tree thread but that has got too long to read them all.

Happens at most clubs these days - seen today that all the Oldham owner (that Scholes fell out with) owns is the name of the club - Even our ground ownership is a seperate company to the club but held by the same owners

Man City do not own the Ethihad and Chelsea do not own Stamford Bridge are other examples

We separated things when we bought back the ground, kept it apart from the club and placed a third company above them which is the company we are now shareholders of.

Brighton and their ground/training facilities are two different businesses owned by a single entity, which is then owned by that rich bloke, Bloom?
It's a bit if an odd set up, but no one seems to be overly arsed in the Brighton fan base.

Boro are the same, club and haulage firm owned by single entity so the clubs losses can be offset against haulage firms profits to a degree.
That's gone on for years and again it doesn't seem to raise any cause for concern amongst their fans.

Not until it goes belly up. Both clubs you mention have been bailed out in the past but now have real fans in the Chairmans seat. Holloway had it at Blackpool and Bristol Rovers and was set against it.

Davies was a real at Bolton and we're still watching the fall out from that one.

Credit where it's due to the owners of Brighton and Boro for putting their respective clubs back on their feet, but then making the clubs overly reliant on them for the day to day running costs is where it will eventually end in tears.
