31 Year Record

Post by Bin Ont Turf » Sun Mar 24, 2019 12:24 pm

It looks like the 31 year attendance record for the Sherpa Van Trophy (or whatever it is called these days) will be broken next Sunday, by Portsmouth v Sunderland.

There'll be a minutes silence next Sunday at 2.30pm.

Ahhhh but the record for attendance set by Burnley and Wolves ... was for two 4th (League 2) division teams ... not 3rd Division teams though ;)

But I know what you mean :)

Difficult to imagine that 80,841 would ever be beaten, but no surprise that Portsmouth and Sunderland are the two clubs involved.

Incidentally, that attendance of 80,841 is the third highest of any game involving Burnley.

Even higher than the 80,518 that watched our game against Sheff Utd in 2009.

I seem to recall being told, or reading that there wasn’t a higher attendance at the old Wembley after that as it was the last game before the terracing was replaced by seating and the capacity reduced to 80,000. Anyone know whether that is true?

Our first FA Cup Final v. Liverpool in 1914 was played at The Crystal Palace with a gate of 72,778.

The play off game was a sell out so it's hard to imagine how Sunderland and Portsmouth can beat it?
Unless the corporate/white collar side didn't all turn up?

Different venue, Quickenthetempo.

Edit......Sorry, ignore that.

The playoff game was a sellout but if you ever watch the video there were large top tier seating unused, at both ends.

The Wearsiders have been allocated 38,979 tickets for the East Stand - the same end which Sunderland fans occupied for the League Cup final in 2014.

Pompey's sales have topped 30,000.

An impressive 74,434 supporters watched Coventry City lift the trophy following a 2-1 victory over Oxford United in 2017, an attendance which remains the highest at the new Wembley Stadium.

I think we might retain the record unless 10,000 plus walk-ons attend

Middle tier

Both clubs only got 37,000-ish tickets.

Bosscat - It's been reported that Pompey have sold 40,000, like Sunderland.

Of course we also played at the old Wembley again in 1994, six years after the Sherpa Van final.

This time against Stockport in the Play-off final and the attendance was a mere 44,806, although to be fair we probably contributed 40,000 of that gate.

Being a mathematician, I can confirm that 80,518 is always lower than 80,841.

Being an international mathematician :ugeek: , I can confirm that that isn't true if the 80,841 are German but the 80,518 are English. ;)

The record is broken, from the BBC:

As we wait for extra-time to begin, how about this...

A confirmed Wembley crowd of 85,021 breaks the record for any final in the competition's history, surpassing the 80,841 who saw Wolves beat Burnley in 1988.

We take our hats off to Portsmouth and Sunderland fans.

Ironically on the weekend we play wolves again... in the premier league!

It's weird how often these coincidences crop up - us and Wolves still hold the record though for a game between two teams from the bottom division.

Considering, in those days, it was 2 4th division teams, I think our record is more of a special record!

Indeed. 88 was my first 'away game' yesterday my dads birthday. Unfortunately I got a two nil loss. But 31 years later he gets revenge with a 2-0 win!

Even more impressive considering the 40,000 is more than half of the population of Burnley!

Wolverhampton, Sunderland and Portsmouth all have populations well in excess of 200,000

We need to get relegated on the bounce to reclaim the record again.
