Re: 7/2 for a Grand National favourite?
I read over the weekend that over the years, the Grand National has sent out favourites at both 3/1, and 2/1 back in the mists of time, apparently the former unseated the rider at the 11th, and the 2/1 shot fell at the 1st fence .....the shortest price winner was Pethlyn at 11/4 in 1919 ..
Since the 1st Grand National in 1839, only four horses have ever won consecutive races, Abd-El-Kader ( 1850-51 ), The Colonel ( 1869-70 ), Reynoldstown ( 1935-36 ), and the great Red Rum ( 1973-74 ). For some younger posters, and others, Red Rum ran 5 times between 1973-77, finishing 1st, 1st, 2nd, 2nd and 1st respectively ....
Best of luck with your selections, one and all, and let's hope 40 horses and jockeys return home safely on Saturday ...

No outright favourite has won since Hedgehunter in 2005 ( 2 joint favs have at 7s and 10s respectively). 4/1 is totally unbackable in the National.FactualFrank wrote:The favourite has won 5 times since 1994.

Last years Scottish National winner Joe Farrell is today's market mover for The National. 50s > 20s (20s in places)
However there has been no Welsh trained Grand National winner for around a century I think

Appears to have been some serious money this morning for Joe Farrell, last years Scottish National winner, but surely if that horse is fancied then the third in that race, Trevor Hemmings' Vintage Clouds must have a great chance.THEWELLERNUT70 wrote:Last years Scottish National winner Joe Farrell is today's market mover for The National. 50s > 20s (20s in places)

Vintage Clouds has a weight pull of 4lbs for a 4 length beating in that race so must come into the calculations.

Tiger Roll edged out to 4/1 and expected to be 5/1 in the morning before getting backed into 7/2 for the race.
I'm taking quite a shine to last year's runner up Pleasant Company. Great finish to the race last year. Knows the fences and got round easy. A nice 16/1 shot.

I rarely back a horse in the National but will have some money on Walk in the Mill.

Re: 7/2 for a Grand National favourite?
You see I'll never tip horses up until it comes to the National. That's when things become a bit nerdy where I'm concerned. Its something that I do tend to study in depth and follow potential runners in the National throughout the season, hence the backing of Rathvinden at a big price weeks ago.

An exciting race and a very worthy winner. I thought Walk in the Mill would run a big race and he might be one for the future.

A good race all in all though the fav was totally in control . The fences provide only a cursory challenge these days having being so heavily shortened /thinned/drops removed etc ( try running 40 horses 4.4m round Cheltenham and see how many make it) Still a superb sporting spectacle though .

True the National isn't what it was but then neither is the fatality rate from it which is great.AlargeClaret wrote:A good race all in all though the fav was totally in control . That’s a very fair point , nothing can be so sickening in racing than the screens going up around a crumpled horse . Would be nice if they’d perhaps left Beechers though as an ultimate type fence .Goobs wrote:True the National isn't what it was but then neither is the fatality rate from it which is great.

Re: 7/2 for a Grand National favourite?
An excellent ride and you could see the class oozing out at the end when most were struggling.
Let's hope Tiger Roll has at least another season and shot at the National instead of the usual retire early for studding.

Re: 7/2 for a Grand National favourite?
Not many jump horses retire early for studding - that’s a flat horse thing.Quickenthetempo wrote:An excellent ride and you could see the class oozing out at the end when most were struggling.

As long as Tiger Roll stays fit and healthy he’ll be back next year. The way he won at Cheltenham and yesterday was incredible - he was travelling at a completely different speed to the other horses...he was cantering and keeping up with the others who were already hard at work. It was only the last 300 yards or so that he actually looked like he was trying yesterday.
Hope he is fit next year as he is a very special horse. Not many horses have won at all distances between 2 and 4 miles and if he can avoid falling at the Grand National next year (which is hard to do and he made a couple of mistakes yesterday) it’s hard to see him getting beaten.
Re: 7/2 for a Grand National favourite?
It was heartbreaking to see a horse (up for review) writhing in agony after being brought down at the first, I can't understand why anyone who loves horses would risk them in this fashion. .... Well greed I guess!AlargeClaret wrote:That’s a very fair point , nothing can be so sickening in racing than the screens going up around a crumpled horse . 2/ Age 8 to 11
3/ Season Runs 3 or more

6/ Weight up to 11st 6lb
7/ Season Fall no more than 1
8/ Career Fall no more than 2
9/ Biggest Chase win over 30k

Re: 7/2 for a Grand National favourite?
I don't think it is tbh...in most sport there's an element of risk and fatalities unfortunately happen.been more than a few in the great north run and London marathon both big fund raising events. I'm sure the majority of racehorses have excellent care and decent Lives.icu81b4 wrote:It was heartbreaking to see a horse (up for review) writhing in agony after being brought down at the first, I can't understand why anyone who loves horses would risk them in this fashion. .... Re: 7/2 for a Grand National favourite?
Not greed. Horse lovers don't just love horses because they look pretty - if so, they could be stuffed and kept in the hall. Horses are for galloping, jumping, riding, racing, having fun with. And if some of them die in the process - well, so do some humans when doing what humans enjoy. Which is better for a horse - a short life but a happy one? Or a life standing in a field watching the grass grow, except in winter when there isn't any grass?icu81b4 wrote:It was heartbreaking to see a horse (up for review) writhing in agony after being brought down at the first, I can't understand why anyone who loves horses would risk them in this fashion. .... But whatever else people go racing for, it isn't to make money!

There's a very powerful reason why "entire" horses don't like brushing through the fences. Whatever else Tiger Roll may do when he retires, it won't involve fatherhood.Quickenthetempo wrote:An excellent ride and you could see the class oozing out at the end when most were struggling.

Re: 7/2 for a Grand National favourite?
O' Leary is still saying it's not likely he will go for a third go at the National as he fears for his safety carrying top weight. That the Cross Country is the main aim again next year.
The 65k prize money is Cheltenham's 2nd lowest of the meeting and the National is 571k.
I hope he is just playing games with the handicapper as such a classy horse should be in the biggest and best races.
Maybe test him out in the Gold cup instead of a nothing race?

These horses won’t even have a life in the first place without racing. Nevermind standing about eating hrass all day.dsr wrote:Not greed. The guy is a born liar and his ego is way too big to resist the opportunity to go down in the history books.
