The Alt-Right Playbook
This YouTube series is fantastic and has helped me understand just who the alt-right are and how they, and their beliefs, are attractive to certain types of people.
The 'Never Play Defense' video is a particular highlight because it explains perfectly how they use dishonest arguments, and always dart around making entirely different arguments immediately after you debunk their last one, among many other traits. So if there's only one video you watch i recommend you watch that one. But i encourage you all to watch all of them in however many sittings it takes, because knowing this stuff, and being able to identify it will only help you when it comes to spotting their tactics and strategies in the wild.
I've linked each video in order below, and the whole playlist at the bottom in case you want to save that.

Two replies. Zero arguments against the contents.
I predicted that this thread would be met by resistance from the kind of people who need these videos the most. So far I've not been wrong.

You might feel the need to view these video's, but some of us just can't be arsed to view what you feel we should.
Where you are concerned ctrl/alt/delete is a better idea

I just don't know why you don't start a thread and then respond to it yourself,
I am sure you are capable and it would be so much easier, for you, than to have to wait around for meaningful replies.

This thread is actually helpful to people. Why would i start it and then reply to it myself? This thread is intended to start a discussion about how the alt-right operate both on this forum and elsewhere. Why would you want to troll it?

Then you don't know what trolling means, because that's all you've done so far. Nothing you've posted has been about the actual topic, only about me personally. That's trolling.MrTopTier wrote:Not trolling Turtle, genuinely,

I am perfectly aware of what trolling means, if that is what you think I have been doing, then nothing I write is going to change your mind.
You may make the inference, you may believe I am trolling, but I am not, look at my posting history, if I was a troll, there would be evidence previously. There isn't,so stop being a dick.

"Ha ha, Turtle has turned into a Labrador"
But i'm being the dick. And you're not trolling. Suuuuuuure.
Here's what's happened. I posted a thread. You decide to troll it. I point out that all you've done in this thread is troll it. And now you're acting terrible upset because i'm calling you a troll. **** off, mate. You're a cancer to this discussion. Maybe to others you're perfectly fine, but in this one you're nothing but a tumour.

As always you make assumptions of what people are thinking. Without knowing.
You call me a tumour on this thread, you are a cancer on this board, it is a constant boring drip drip of utter and complete bullshit, day after day the same. Your opinions whilst consistent are boring, irksome and tiring.
Reply as many times as you want, it’s the only way your **** threads get bumped back.I gave you the opportunity to stop being a dick, but you can’t help yourself.

Re: The Alt-Right Playbook
Exposing obviously stupid argument isn't pointless. The guy says that making the case that they're obviously stupid directly to the alt-right idiot spouting them is what's pointless. He advocates for talking past them and explaining to others how the argument is stupid. If it be your will wrote:I watched a couple, then read the thread. And on this very thread:
- First the boxes: Turtle, you're a... 1) Druggy 2) Deluded nutcase 3) Some useless beta male and a homosexual 4) Sad lonely individual that never gets out... therefore you're not worth listening to. You are non-mainstream.
- All sorts of accusations are made. Everyone's accusing you of something.
- Several 'dumb' arguments are made that are demonstrably false.
- All the posts against you are immediately aggressive, because they are society's strong winners, and you the weak loser.
Flipping heck, these videos are right aren't they??
Okay, so the videos have merit and are worth watching. What about the advice they gave to counter these tactics? 1) Don't get dragged into obviously stupid arguments because that means they are controlling the discussion and look strong and therefore right - stick to the original point. 2) Exposing arguments that are obviously stupid and incoherent is completely pointless. For them it's more about looking strong than being coherent 3) Don't find yourself constantly on the defensive, that makes them look strong and you weak, and therefore wrong. 4) Don't constantly seek compromise or resolution, again that makes you look weak and therefore wrong.
Do you think you might have fallen for every single trap, IT? Even on this very thread?
Fascinating videos. I recommend them.
And no, i don't think i've fallen for any of them on this thread because i don't think the bullies in this thread are Alt-Right nazis.

What people with a bit more lateral thinking ability see is that the people Charlie call the alt-right on here are not alt-right at all (trump supporters, racists, nazis etc)they are just people who use the same silly tactics as Charlie when they are brought down to his level.
The ironic thing is, that Charlie displays all of the characteristics of an alt-right person, when you use the OP's definition of alt-right.

It's a lie you have enjoyed spreading for years. It's a scummy thing to do, and naturally if it's a scummy thing to do it just so happens that it's a tactic the alt-right loves to use. Publicly smearing the reputation of people who disagree with you by making unfounded accusations. Why do you do it? I'm not sure exactly. But it is certainly a tactic that the alt-right uses.
When i say that someone is an idiot, a nazi, a racist, a homophobe, i can always ALWAYS explain why that is my opinion, and it is NEVER because they disagree with me. Never. But you will never stop pretending that it's a reason i use those terms to describe certain people. As a good alt-righter would do.

You're full of ****.
You literally posted a picture mocking me as someone who calls everyone i disagree with "alt-right".
Instead of ineffectively back-peddling, just admit that you were wrong to characterise me as someone who defines others based on whether they agree with me or not.

You only do that to the people who trigger you.
Is that better?
(I bet the alt-right guide to calling people alt-right on the internet told you I would say that word didnt they?)

You know how I know you aren't interested in actually finding out how i define other people as certain things? Like how I define you as alt-right, for example, or how i define someone as a racist, or a homophobe, or a transphobe, or an anti-intellectual, or as stupid etc? Because in the years we've both been using this website you've probably accused me of using those nouns based on my not liking them, or disagreeing with them a dozen or so times. You've just assumed i'm doing it for reasons that cannot be rationally explained. And yet, not once have you paused to ask "Turts, why do you believe that?"
Even now when i explain to you that you're wrong about it, you choose not to ask me to clarify anything for you, you just switch to another assumption that you know is wrong but it does what you want it to do, it smears me with your lie.
Re: The Alt-Right Playbook
I'm not bothered about why you label people (fairly sure you have been asked these things plenty of times by other posters without you justifying anything)
I'm quite happy for you to do it on the sly on threads like this (where you just make a fool of yourself) while simultaneously trolling, and crying about being trolled.
I'm surprised you have not asked for the mods as yet

Tiao asked me several times when i challenged him once, he kept providing quotes of times where i said someone, or their opinion, was stupid/bumb/idiotic etc and each time I explained to him why i called it stupid. He said it was just because they disagreed with me, but couldn't find a single example where i couldn't give him a perfectly good explanation. To this date he's the only one that actually put some effort into accusing me.Damo wrote:I'm not bothered about why you label people (fairly sure you have been asked these things plenty of times by other posters without you justifying anything)

Whilst it is funny watching people with hell bent political leanings (left and right wing) go on, does get a bit tiresome after a while.
Do you actually have an interest in football/Burnley football club Imploding Turtle? I don't think I've ever seen you contribute to a discussion unless its politically motivated

Reading this thread is the perfect tonic after a long and hard day at work.
It serves as a poignant reminder that even though teaching is a tiring occupation, the alternative of giving up and spending all day on the internet and ending up like the main posters on this thread is far, far worse.

Re: The Alt-Right Playbook
I doubt it's the platform to be honest. If it be your will wrote:Yes, you're right, that was one of the recommendations.
The videos were good. The interpretations were particularly good (especially that one about putting someone in a box to avoid having to actually engage with what is being said). The advice, though, I can't really see it helping, much that I wish it would. How can you talk past someone, exposing an illogical accusation, all the while without allowing the opponent to 'control the discussion'?
In my 1300 posts, made over 3 years, the majority were to further 2 causes: The case for Lexit and the case for Corbyn's 2017 manifesto. I would bet that in all that time, not a single person has either switched to a Lexit position or voted for Corbyn as a result of my contributions. In this respect, I've achieved zero. Okay, so I'm useless - I should just live with it. (But can anyone genuinely believe their contributions to this messageboard have changed a single vote?)
Yet I can confidently say I have persuaded many people to take up these positions in real life. Indeed in real life I was persuaded by the Lexit case by someone else, despite my remainer instincts. So there's something about this format that makes it completely pointless. The constant idiocy and unwillingness to learn cripples everything. Christ, I've noticed even aggi - the one of spock-like calmness and logic - has started to crack recently under the sheer weight of stupidity you're exposed to on here.
I don't think there is a tactic that will ever work on these platforms. Then again, if every time you started a conversation you had Ringo balling something irrelevant down everyone's ear-hole, or Damo constantly shoving other peoples' work in your face thinking it was clever, you wouldn't get very far in real life either.
Surely you've asked yourself, in 16,000 posts, "Have I actually achieved anything?"
It's probably more to do with the fact that people can completely ignore your nonsense on here. But in real life situations, they are probably too polite. Pretend they agree and hope you go away

A couple of alt-right fascists found themselves getting arrested this week for what they posted on Twitter.

He doesn't really humiliate that many people on here though.
He likes to think he does, but the majority have realized it isn't worth engaging in much of a conversation with him because he won't change his mind about anything, it's his way or nothing at all.
Some will bait him for a laugh, others fall for his waffle.

Vice on Amazon Prime also a decent insight into the way think tanks etc manipulate public opinion. Sometimes as simple as changing the name of something which is unpopular - inheritance tax to death tax etc.
