Re: Black Pudding on Burnley open market
I'm sure the one on Burnley market was Nuttalls - a guy called Graham used to stand it.
I went with my grandad as a nipper, skipped a generation with my dad, and then took both my girls there
on a saturday morning as a treat for helping me do the family shopping.
They only mentioned it the other week as one of those happy memories of childhood.
Glad to have been part of it - and yes I remember the rather grubby towel on the rusty nail.
PS They sell them in the local Tesco in Padiham on the Deli counter - they're not bad either.

Happy days...every Monday ( early 60s ) used to walk down into burnley from the old grammar School and have a "lean " one at a stall there...I think they sold tripe as well but could be wrong .Had a trip to Tod recently with 2 mates for a drink and bought three belters from a butchers stall in the Market Hall..as you go in the front door its in the back right hand corner .In that little market hall there are FOUR butchers shops .The proper ones are difficult to find over here in Yorkshire ( like a lot of stuff )

A Healthy Alternative
If you are concerned about your diet, Black pudding is a very healthy dish and a good source of protein, it is also essentially carb-free, making it an ideal British sausage replacement if you are on a low carb diet. There are relatively few calories in black pudding, especially when compared with other types of sausage and back pudding is rich in iron and zinc, two nutrients that are frequently missing from the average adult’s body. If you’re ready to try something different, give black pudding a try !

God Tony i suffer from terrible gout on occasions and i can testify how painful it can be.ClaretTony wrote:Get off the thread then for your own good - I know just how painful a gout attack is
I buy concentrated Montmorency black cherry juice from Holland and Barrett when I get an attack and take a glass full in water every morning..It does help to get rid of it fairly quickly.Turmeric tablets are also good if taken every day as a preventative.
I have to be careful what i eat ss certain foods do set it off..with me its prawns.beer and cheese ,red meat particulsrly..Sods law everything i love.

Only, and I'm touching wood here, had two attacks. The second one was the worst and left me on crutches for weeks and in horrendous pain. That second one was five years ago.The Enclosure wrote:God Tony i suffer from terrible gout on occasions and i can testify how painful it can be.

Any of (but not always together) vinegar, salt and pepper, tobasco, lea and perrins, french or english mustard are all great with it!AlargeClaret wrote:CHadwicks in Bury actually used to supply ( probsby /possibly still do ) most of the black pudding stalls in the area inc Burnley /Blackburn /Accy/Preston etc .
It’s the food of the gods either par boiled or fried , though anything but English mustard would be poor form , as for vinegar wtf would anyone destroy the flavour of it with that ! Jesus wept ! Vinegar was for tripe

The potted and jellied (is that the right term?) is top notch from there.

Proper tasty food such as black pudding, belly pork pigs cheeks etc are now deemed to be luxury items because some poncy celebrity chef has cooked with them hence the price rise. We have even now got triple cooked chips FFS.

Gout is a painful memory for me now. 300mg of allopurinol daily has sorted that out. Eat and drink what I want now, but not sure what the drug could be doing to me long term. But can it be worse than the pain of gout?

This brings back memories of going back to Grandma's on Godley St with my Dad, Brother and Uncle after the match and tucking into Black Pudding (with a dab of mustard) from Burnley Market whilst the teleprinter was bobbing up and down like a Beetle with hiccups revealing the rest of the games results on the black & white telly

My favourite food memory. I can almost sense my late grandad there when I go for a couple of leany ones before every game I get back up for. As mentioned before, loads of salt, malt vinegar and a Blodge of English mustard to dip into.
